Made as a Design Team card for Try Stampin' -Or Not- on Tuesday Sketch Challenge #311: http://trystampinontuesday.blogspot.com/ with an optional theme of checkerboard or plaid.
As soon as I saw "checkerboard" I remembered 2002 retired "Border Builders" Stampin' Up! set that I hadn't used that much, but was perfect for this week's challenge. The staggered "checkerboard" was perfect, and when I saw that one of the "filler" stamps was a swirl, I just HAD to think of a way to include the new "Swirly Birds" stamp set that is all about swirls!
I chose the colors because I wanted a plaid of some type for the background panel. The only one I could find in my stash was from a retired "Sweet Pea" Designer Series (DSP) that was orange. Of course, yellow and green go perfectly with orange, so my color palette was set!
The vertical sketch element was the checkerboard stamped in Pear Pizzaz, with Calypso Coral swirls (from the Border Builder stamp set). It was matted with Calypso Coral card stock.
The largre square floral panel was created by stamping the solid flower background with Crushed Curry, then overlain with the smallest swirl diecut from Hello Honey cardstock. The orange flower was stamped with Calypso Coral using the smallest swirl stamp in the set, then overlain with a swirl diecut from Calypso Coral card stock.
Each of the flowers got an enamel dot in a matching color to add just a bit of depth to the card. It seemed there needed to be more the in background of the flowers so they were "grounded", so I used the spatter stamp from "Swirly Birds", as well as leaves that were stamped with Pear Pizzaz and leaf veins stamped with Mossy Meadow. The flower panel was matted with Pear Pizzaz.
The vertical checkerboard was glued down. The matted flower panel was attached to the card front using three pieces of Adhesive Foam Strips on the right side, and two rolled up Mini Glue Dots on the left. I did it this way because the left side of the flower panel was going to be sitting on top of the checkerboard piece, so there was already added height on the left side.
This completed plaid panel was attached to the Pear Pizzaz card base with Tombow Multi Liquid Glue (my "go to" adhesive when I'm making cards!).
The hardest part of this card was placing the tiny swirls between the green checkerboard squares. To make this relatively easy, I used my Stampin' Up! Stamp-a-ma-jig to stamp them exactly where I wanted them centered.
