This is for PollyÂ’s terrific mixed media challenge where we were introduced to Godieve Tijskens aka StampingMathilda and her wonderful blog feature - Sunday Scraps.
I have a very, very large collection of scraps, backgrounds waiting for a home, die-cuts, punched left overs and a gazillion other things that any self-respecting Splitcoastie would have.
I have several of these backgrounds in my stash, this particular one has been on my desk for weeks and weeks. I am terribly lazy when it comes to washing brushes and stencils so I tend to “clean” them on a piece of cardstock and continue adding to it until I think I can one day use it.
This particular background is HP photo paper. I was experimenting using Distress Spray Stain and spray starch (Woolies homebrand ironing aid). I sprayed the stain onto alfoil, sprayed the puddle with ironing aid instead of water, then dunked the photo paper in it.
The bright blue is Mermaid Lagoon stain and the purple is actually Blueprint Sketch. I need to experiment a bit more to see if the colour change is due to the ironing aid. Over the next few weeks, each time I used a stencil, gesso, paintbrush etc, I used it on the background.
I went to my collection of old punched flowers and left-over long legs for my crazy birds. One of my very first punches was a set of Fiskars flowers – these flowers are seriously old LOL. I added a couple of pearls from my odds and ends embellishments box.
The panel measures 6.5” x 4”, I adhered it to a 5”x 7” cardbase and trimmed off some of the right hand side edge, then stuck another spare bird leg to the inside of the card. I had a heap of fun making this, sorry I am so late to the party.
I hope you all have a great week, thank you for looking.

WOW! If that's the scrap you used to clean stencils and brushes then I need to do this! What incredible texture and color! You have SO much to keep the eye interested, Susie! And bird leg flower stems- brilliant! What a wonderful, creative imagination you have!
I love your idea of using the paper you used to clean your brushes! Just love what you did on this, Susie! Wonderful colors and scraps, and bird legs! Great card!

I always love to hear successful ways of using photo paper, so thanks for that. I am intrigued looking at the top corner of the base layer where it looks as if it was hydrangea blossoms emerging into the light. And I love the leggy stems. You're not the latest to the party, I made a second card late yesterday evening , yet to photograph it.

WHAT??? Bird Legs!!!!! .....Susie! Is Nothing sacred???
I digress. LOVE your background!!! Your "cleaning" mess is so well tended and nourished! Well presented for it's debut! Actually it's Fantastically Spectacular...and it doesn't surprise me a bit!!! You always come through with some of the most Amazingly Creative things! This may very well be a "mutt" background (in USA terminology this means a pup of various origins), but the effect is definitely Pure Bred!

Oh, sis, this is amazing, and I giggled at how this background "evolved" from swiping your brushes a bit here and there. And how funny that there are some leftover bird legs - haha! Laughed at Ellen's comment above me! It's beautiful, and it just shows you how something beautiful can be had with the right "stuff" in the right hands - yours! Totally love it! Love and hugs! xoxo

Oh Susie - I love the way you have used left over bird legs for your flower stalks. I recognised them straight away. Love the accumulation of colours in the background from all the different techniques and colours.
