This card was made for the Treasured Memories challenge for VSN. Brenda (tessaduck) asked us to incorporate a precious memory into our card. My father had a life-long love affair with the sea, and it was his dream to own his own sailboat. Often he would come home from work, load us into the station wagon and drive us to the beach to watch the sunset while we roasted hot dogs for dinner, followed by ice cream cones at Swenson's. One of our memorable family vacations was the year I turned seventeen. He chartered a sailboat and we sailed across the channel from Newport to Catalina Island. A few years later he realized his dream and bought a 27-foot sloop.
The image on my card is a photocopy of a drawing I made for him when I was eleven years old. After his passing (Alzheimer's, like Brenda's mother), we were cleaning out his desk, and this drawing was still under the glass on the pull-out writing shelf. I was 52 at that time, so it had been there for over four decades. Boy, did I feel loved and appreciated! He would have approved of the simplicity of this card...

It is a shame the number of people who have Alzheimer's disease. My mother-in-law also had it!
Your card represents a very strong, loving memory and I am so glad you shared it with us. I am hoping you are preserving the precious picture you drew him so many years ago.
Your card is outstanding and the sentiment matches!

What a lovely story - I'm glad your dad did get to realise that dream. I grew up by the sea and still miss it - though sailing never featured. I still don't like swimming in pools after learning in the sea and swimming there all through the holidays each year. So I love your sentiment. The drawing is way cool, too. It reminds me of a boat trip we took up the river Fal in Cornwall when we were visiting friends there one year.

Wow! This is so gorgeous! And you drew that at 11!!! I love the way your gems are placed and yes, that sentiment is so right! What precious memories of your father. You have to understand how much that drawing meant to him! - - Even though their memories are gone, the love is still there. I found that out during the 17 years of my mom's dementia! Treasure your memories!
