I've been having fun making sonobe ornaments. This is made from old SU mini catalogs. Paper squares are 2-1/2", so the ornament is slightly less than 3".
I wanted to try the faux metal figures technique with this one. Just call me crazy! Because of the shape, this was a rather long drawn out procedure, especially getting the tape down into the valleys between the pyramids. After I got all the tape on and made tiny little rivets with a mechanical pencil (which are barely visible, BTW), it was very bright & shiny. I decided I wanted to tone it down just a bit, so proceeded to add white acrylic paint, which took forever to dry, because the tape doesn't absorb any of the liquid. By this time, I knew that I didn't like the paint on it, so I tried some of Dina's instructions to remove the paint -- less than effective (sorry, Dina). I think I needed to be able to use more pressure to remove the paint, but since this is just paper and hollow, I didn't have that luxury. I removed as much paint as I could, and then used polished stone technique with alcohol inks to add color. I'm not entirely happy with it, but I can definitely say it was a learning experience.
