I made this fun little autumn leaf embellishment with clear shrink plastic and an oil-based paint pen.
After trying my hand at a couple of original Zentangle designs (which came out good but ended up looking a bit busy once shrunk to their finished size), I went in search of some inspiration. I found THIS wonderful embroidery pattern at Urban Threads -- it puts me in mind of swirling leaves. I plunked down my $1.00 for use of the image, cropped and re-sized it to fit my needs, traced one of the leaves onto my shrink film (with a few tweaks of my own - including a border), cut it out, punched a hole in it, and baked it according to manufacturer instructions.
I carefully shaped my leaf once it came out of the oven. Once baked, the painted side is nicely textured while the unpainted side remains smooth. I chose to attach my leaf with the painted side down, but either side can be used face up.
Since I wanted the leaf to be the star of the show, I kept the rest of the card simple with a fitting quote about autumn leaves that I formatted on my computer and printed onto the card stock. I made a simple ring out of jewelry wire (so as to avoid scratching the paint off with tighter and stiffer ready-made rings) added a jump ring and attached the finished charm to my card with brown ribbon.
