journaling: Leaving the condos and resorts behind, we followed the guide book's recommendation to try Honolua Bay. There is no parking lot so you have to get there early and hug the road to park. Then follow a dirt path through the trees, crossing a sometimes dry streambed where it opens up to the beautiful bay. There is no beach - the shore is all rocks. Since this is a reserve there are tons of fish and coral with great visibility once you get away from the shoreline. The snorkeling is so good that many people pay for cruises to this "secret" spot. It's usually pretty calm; if we saw surfers it meant snorkeling conditions aren't at their best.
