Misti's challenge was to make a card showing one of the fun summer toys that we used to play with. Growing up on a farm in Wisconsin, we spent a lot of time working in the garden and fields. Most of the rest of my time was spent on my bicycle, but I don't have a bike image. My brother and I both spent a lot of time playing in the marsh, picking cattails, catching frogs, sailing paper boats, etc.
The scene on my card really doesn't look much like the marshes we played in, but the elements are there, including an origami sailboat. I darkened the edges of the boat with black ink so it would show up better. I used Stickles for the liquid eyes of the frog; they look a little like martian or monster eyes! I use watercolor pencils on the cattails and the frog. I masked the bottom of the cattails so they would look like they were growing out of the water. The green foreground was done by applying an inkpad direct to paper. The sky was sponged, and the water – this is the exciting part for me.
I've been hearing about Gelatos, so I bought a small set of 4 blue tubes and have been playing to see how they work. Finally figured it out last night so I used them to make the water, blending with both my finger and a wet brush. Now that I know how much fun they are, I'll have to get more colors! This card took me over 30 but less than 45 minutes to make.
