journaling: HawaiiÂ’s subtropical climate allows sugarcane to be planted and harvested throughout the year. Planters grow sugarcane for about two years to achieve maximum sugar content. By harvest time, sugarcane stalks can be 30 feet long and form a thick, twisted mat weighing nearly 100 tons an acre. Before harvest the fields are burned, fires burn off the accumulation of leaf trash and vermin. The burns are closely controlled and last only a few minutes. The stalks are unharmed and immediately pushed into windrows with tractor mounted push rakes. Crane grabbers pick up piles of cane and load them into specially designed trucks. Harvesting season lasts from April to October.

I really like the 'realness' addition of the straw. That's a cool element.
