Remembering Onie. Well, I never knew her personally, but her photograph has been in my stamp room for two months and has become a source of inspiration. To see her face and think of the stories I have been told about her life just makes me smile.
Here is where Onie's story began on SCS, and here is Celisa's comment that inspired this card:
“That image reminds me of my grandmother and she died when I was only 15, that was a long time ago! Thanks for helping me to remember her today! She wore glasses, pearls, dresses just like that one, and hats with net on them too! I just took another look at your card to see if I missed anything and you know what? I almost cried, she used to crochet doilies just like the one your card is staged on! Thanks for the happy memories!”
The next thing I see in my email, is this photo, and I have loved Onie ever since! Here is a lil more about this incredible woman, written by her granddaughter, Celisa. I think to honor Onie is a beautiful way to celebrate Mother's everywhere.
“Her name? Hmm...not that I don't know, but it's one of those weird things I don't know WHY! Her given name was Ionie, but she ALWAYS went by Onie.” Celisa was only 15 when Onie went to Heaven. “I do not know what her favorite color was. She did not wear bright colors. Guess most of her house dresses were like a rose print, maybe in pinks or blues? But when she dressed up she wore, black, navy, or dark grays. The hat I remember (and so WISH I had) was black with black tulle netting on it! Both my parents worked, but she was always there! She didn't drive, but she was an excellent cook! No recipes-just a natural! She would make this cake for us at least once a week. We loved it and when I married, I tried to figure it out to no avail. One day, I was reading a recipe and I said...THAT'S IT...that's mamaw's "Striped Cake" recipe! Well, I left out the things I knew she would never have put in her cake and tried it out my way and VIOLA...it was HER cake! I made this and took it to a family reunion and EVERYONE said it was as good as mamaw used to make. I disagreed only in that HER love was missing, but I put my love for her into that cake! I made that cake for my kids at least every now and then and you know what? It is ALL 3 of my kids FAVORITE cake!"
Celisa & I became first time grandmothers around the same time, we are bound by this, and destined to be friends for life! I may never have met Onie, and I have not seen Celisa eye to eye, and yet I love them both. Funny how God can tie hearts together.
Thanks for visiting and getting to know Onie.
Happy Mother's Day.

Memories are made from love and this memory of yours certainly is. I too have wonderful memories of my Nana, she was a fabulous cook, everything she turned her hand to, was wonderful. Thanks for sharing your memories and of course your beautiful card. :-)

Heartstrings are being tugged in all different directions!
My grandmother, YOU, your "Uh...Define Normal" card, your loving tribute to my grandmother and to mothers everywhere!
What a wonderful way you share God's love, through your written words and with your masterful and oh so crafty hands!
God Bless you and keep you safe in his embrace! The world could use a lot more just like YOU! If everyone took just a few minutes to be as kind and generous as YOU are, what a wonderful world this would be!
You are simply the BEST! Happy Mother's Day, Pat!
With my love and gratitude always!

Your beautiful card reminds me of my grandmother too - the look of the dark colored dress and hat, against the lovely BG paper - love the flowers - as always - and the gorgeous framing of Onie's picture in the SB. What a masterpiece!!

What a wonderful card and I LOVED all that you wrote above. My grandmothers name was Inez and she was a wonderful cook and was more like a mother to me than a grandmother. All of us grandkids are trying to find her apple cake recipe that somehow got lost...you never cease to amaze me with the beauties you put out every week!Your talent is so inspiring. This card is exceptional because of the picture and tribute. TYFS

Oh what a trip down memory lane.....my grandmother has been gone since 1972 and my mother 1980 - I always feel a little tug when people are making Mother Day cards and I have no one to make one for.....thanks for reminding me of the special memories I do have from those days past. As a mother of two adopted children I have a lot of love every mothers day as I remember two special women who chose life for their babies so I could be a mother. God bless mothers eveywhere.

Pat - such an inspiring card and story - makes me want to dig out some pictures of my family and make some cards. This is lovely in every way - but especially the sweet things you wrote and thought when you did it - love reading the insight into what you were thinking when this creation came into life. Hugz to you sweet girl!!!
