When I was growing up, I always liked walking in my grandparents' apple orchard. My sisters and I could hardly wait for the apples to turn ripe enough to eat. We'd help pick them, and then we'd help our mom make applesauce, apple pies, apple cobbler, and other apple yumminess. We'd also help pick them so our grandmother could make the BEST apple kolache EVER.
My grandmother passed away in 1994, 19 years after her bout with breast cancer. My uncle inherited my grandparents' farm, and we've continued to enjoy the apples from the orchard although most of the trees were uprooted during Hurricane Isabel in 2003. The last remaining apple tree was destroyed in a storm this summer.
I'm going to miss those apples.
