OK, I have to admit that when I read today's Limited Supplies Challenge--limit your card to something that can be linked to one of the US Presidents--at first, all I could picture was hot-gluing pennies and nickels to card stock (which, given the high price of many embellishments, just might be cost effective!!).
I knew that I wanted to make a birthday card today. I scanned the list of US presidents, and when I hit James Madison, I thought of Dolly Madison (his socialite wife) and remembered Dolly Madison snack cakes. Who else remembers the "Zinger Zapper" and Dolly Madison as the corporate sponsor of all the Charlie Brown holiday TV specials way back when? Anyway, CAKE!! Ta-da!! *There's* my connection to the presidents. I decided to make a birthday card predominantly featuring birthday CAKE, in honor of Dolly Madison, wife of James Madison, our 4th US president. Whew!! Perhaps the mental gymnastics required to make those connections will burn off all the extra calories from the birthday cake . . .
Because I had so much fun with last week's sketch, SC266, I used that as the layout for my card. The DP is a trio from Basic Grey's Blush line. I paper pieced the top layer of the birthday cake (you can see the original image on the corner of the envelope in the foreground of the photo) to give it extra layers and frosting since the sentiment reads "May your layers by many & your frosting be thick."
This card will go to a good friend who believes that cake is just a delivery vehicle for frosting, the more teeth-achingly sweet, the better. Her b-day is next month and I think she'll get a huge kick out of this card.
Thanks for looking!
Emily

I have a DIL who subscribes to that as well! Emily, I laughed out loud, and read your first paragraph to my DH who also laughed. Cost effective? Well sure!! I love your yummy cake, and that wonderful sentiment!! Well done!

I love your idea and had a laugh about the mental gymnastics. Your card is awesome and I am SURE your friend will love it. Wish I had a bite out of that cake. What a sweet tooth I have.
