To be perfectly honest, I have never actually made a Sympathy card before - I have only ever bought them because I have never known how to make one that's simple and unfussy. I would sit down at my desk and just feel lost. But since I started doing CAS cards, it has helped me feel a bit more confident in the "unfussy and understated" category.
I needed a card for our cousin in Wales, so here is what I came up with. It fits into the CAS40 Challenge of 'White and one other color'. See this link for the deets: Forums at Splitcoaststampers I have only used white and gold on the card.
The main embossed panel has been popped up on 1mm dimensionals. The sentiment has been stamped with gold pigment ink and embossed with gold ep, and edged in gold with the same ink. The sentiment has also been popped up on 1mm dimensionals. I made the ribbon in 2 separate elements so it would look neater.
