I have a dear, dear friend who does so much for me. I wanted to make something for her (more than a card). I had bought this pack of 4 square corkboards - with no frames - just plain - at Wal*Mart for $5 or $6. I learned a lot in making this - and actually had to take it apart a few times and make changes to "make it work" - but here is the final product.
I used a DP that I fell in love with from Archiver's that reminded me of my friend. It's from Basic Gray and has both "Offbeat" and "Eccentric" on it - so I'm not 100% certain of it's name - but it's one of those! I used a thick 12x12 cardboard piece (from Archiver's - if you ask - they give you several for free from behind the register. Anyway, my first round of making this, I used Elmer's glue (please don't ask me why...I don't know). But, Elmer's glue, DP and cardboard SOOOO don't mix!!!! The cardboard got all warped and wrinkled and it was a MESS! So, the 2nd time around, I used Scotch (like Scoth tape from 3M) Wrinkle Free Glue Stick and it worked like a charm!!!!
With the corkboard I cut it down - as I wanted the DP to frame it. I think the end size was 9x10 or so. I ended up using wood glue and gluing 2 corkboards together - for thickness. With just one corkboard, your typical tack would come out the other end - and that's no fun! So, I glued the 2 together.
I then wanted to put ribbon around the edges of the corkboard for a more "finished look". I first tried to just use adhesive to put it on - but adhesive and corkboard aren't the best together. So, I ended up using foam tape - that comes in a roll - and is sticky on both sides. That worked good and gave me a good hold.
I actually cut the DP that was going to be behind the corkboard - so I could use it for decorations. So, I laid the corkboard on top of the DP where I was going to place it - traced it - and then cut my hole slightly smaller. I used that cut out DP then for the border stripe on the top of the cork and also for the flower down in the lower corner.
The flower in the lower corner is made using a Fiskars cutting template and little, round, handheld Fiskars cutter. I cut the flower out in both the DP and in a piece of chipboard - glued them together and then ran through my Xyron to make it sticky on the back and adhered to the corkboard.
The hardest thing for me was adhering the corkboard to the DP/cardboard and getting it to stay. I didn't want to use wood glue or Elmer's glue and have it warp the cardboard (again!). But I knew that regular adhesive just wouldn't cut it. In the end, I used the foam that came with the corkboards (for adhering to a wall or other surface) - it's basically like the foam that I used to adhere the ribbon to the side of the corkboard.
I used my crop-a-dile to put jumbo eyelets in the top of the DP/cardboard and ran ribbon through it (Cloud nylon ribbon from Martha Stewart from Michaels).
For the tacks, I actually got some of my ideas from other corkboards I've found here on SCS. I apologize that I can't find them anymore so I can't give credit!!! I used 2 ribbon sliders (non-SU) and ran a bit of ribbon through them. Put a glue dot on back and then stuck to the top of the tack. For the other 3 tacks, I used some large brads I got from a local stamping store, Simple Pleasures. To make them work on a tack, I used floral wire cutters to cut the prongs of the back. I cut as close to the head as possible to give me as flat a surface as possible. I then put a glue dot on the back of them and adhered to the top of the tack. I then tied a piece of ribbon around the middle of the tack head to add some color.
I'm sorry my thoughts here on how I made this are kind of random and jumpy....but I wanted to explain it all before I forget in case someone else out there is looking to make something like this and wants some ideas or guidance.
I'd love your thoughts on my project! I'm also uploading a few more close up photos.
THANKS FOR LOOKING

What a nice board. I love the colors you used. I use sticky strip to keep paper on the cork board. It seems to stay well. Just sharing what has worked for me. =)
