I made this card for the October (200 VSN Mini Cabaret Challenge “Makeshift Costume”. Our challenge was to create a card from the scraps we had lying around.
Coincidentally, I had been experimenting with a new Cricut cartridge over the past two weeks, cutting scalloped circles for a set of scrapbook pages that were a gift for a friend and for another card I made earlier this week using the Dirty Dozen Design Team’s October Sketch. So I had lots of scraps of these shades of pink and rose card stock, just enough designer paper for the background, and several scalloped circles that weren’t the “right” size for either of those projects to choose from.
I had also already embossed a scrap of white card stock with the Cuttlebug music folder for the other card but decided that two white embossed panels was too much white for that card and used a silver pearl panel instead. (Another scrap of that silver pearl found its way onto another card I made for this Mini VSN!)
The word “Friend” was also a “scrap”. I used the Cricut to cut the word “Friends” for the scrapbook pages. However, when I was lifting the word off a brand new and very sticky mat, I accidentally tore the “S” off. I trimmed the “D” and saved the word in my scrap file.
When I read the challenge, a totally different design came to mind and I planned to create a true “costume” with the help of my Cricut. However, as I began to rummage through my scrap files, this card came together very quickly.
Total time: 33 minutes, the bulk of which was spent painting the mouse with water color pencils. Using scraps and keeping the monochromatic theme, especially in coloring the mouse, saved tons of time.
Things I wish IÂ’d done: I was most concerned about saving time to remain within the time constraint, which as it turned out, I did easily. In retrospect, I wish I had lightly sponged the white circle with pink and edged the pink scallops either with brushed ink (white) or MarkieÂ’s MomÂ’s (FaithÂ’s) signature white dots. And I wish that IÂ’d used a darker ink to brush over the musical notes. The pink I used was just a little too light to show up really well.
Edit Note: This is an updated photograph that shows the detail of the embossing much more clearly.

Very cute. I can think of so many uses for a great card like this. The longer I live, the more I appreciate my friends!
