WT841 ~ Recycle for Earth Day ~ {04/22/2021}
It's Sabrina here as your hostess this week. It's Earth Day today - here's a little history for you. Feel free to skip it, or you can find even more on the Earth Day website.
Senator Gaylord Nelson, a junior senator from Wisconsin, had long been concerned about the deteriorating environment in the United States. Then in January 1969, he and many others witnessed the ravages of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, Senator Nelson wanted to infuse the energy of student anti-war protests with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a teach-in on college campuses to the national media, and persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair. They recruited Denis Hayes, a young activist, to organize the campus teach-ins and they choose April 22, a weekday falling between Spring Break and Final Exams, to maximize the greatest student participation.
As 1990 approached, a group of environmental leaders approached Denis Hayes to once again organize another major campaign for the planet. This time, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It also prompted President Bill Clinton to award Senator Nelson the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the highest honor given to civilians in the United States — for his role as Earth Day founder.
History lesson over, back to the challenge. No surprises that today I am asking you to recycle and upcycle on your cards. As much as possible, but at least something. I confess that while I really admire people who see the potential in all sorts of scraps and tags and oddments, I know I'm never going to get round to using most of them so I don't even try holding on to them. But even so, I was able to use two old calendars, an old pair of jeans saved for just such a purpose, and my oft-used tomato paste tubes, along with some packing material, on my card.
Get creative with your recycling, then upload your card or project with the keyword WT841. Don't forget to share with us what you recycled.
*** Due to the ongoing keyword sync issues, it's even more helpful than normal if you come back and leave a link to your card on this thread.
Here's a link to our WT841 Recycle for Earth Day gallery
Here's a link to my sample: WT841 Waste Not, Want Not
If you're not sure how to add a link, here's how:
1. Open 2 windows or tabs: one for your card in the gallery, and one for this thread
2. In this thread, click on reply and type anything you want to show before the link.
3. Go to your card window. Highlight the address for your card. (It says www. splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto..... and so on)
4. Click EDIT. Click COPY
5. Go back to this thread. Click PASTE.
As always, thanks to my fellow teammates for their inspiring recycling, Lisa and Jayne made such lovely cards.

WT841 orange bird
Sabrina- thank you for the upcycle challenge! I've been away from home for 5 months and have used mostly repurposed card elements, friends' "oops" stamped images and recycled items. So for this card- a reverse cut line of trees, embossed background has been used on 3 different cards, then for recycled items- oranges mesh bag, gold and silver ribbon and cord, fabric strip from quilt project, green tea plastic packets for my grass and my sentiment panel is a takeout box. Used watercolor pencils to my friend's oops sparrow image. Here's orange bird

I remember the first Earth Day vividly...I was in Jr High and we had moved into a new building. There was no landscaping around it at that time. Each class got to plant a bush or tree around the school. Don't worry...it wasn't hodge podge...but very planned out. At the end of this of course we had to go back and get stuff from our lockers and in the process we all tracked in tons of dirt in the hallways. I felt terrible for the custodians who had to clean up.

Did you see the Google Doodle for today? Someone planting a tree, and growing up and passing another tree onto his children and so on through the generations. It was lovely!

I didn't get this yesterday, as I spent a fair amount of time talking with friends and family, either on the phone or in person. A good way to spend the day. So I'll be back today with a project which will astonish you. A joke.

I forgot to mention that I thought it appropriate that the word 'miracle' is repeated in the last name of the writer who wrote the sentiment...Lauren Myracle. She writes young adult books.

This certainly was a challenge, to first gather recyclable objects, then put it all together for a card. But it was a fun challenge!
I lucked out!! A Kirkland Body Soap Bars box was white on the outside - perfect for stamping images (although a pain to fussy cut due to thickness) and the inside of the box was a very pretty greenish blue color - perfect for water. That led me into my design.
Nylon netting for the crabs came from a Faux Sea body sponge (seems to be a theme here), and the sand was internal packing material.
great challenge, Sabrina!

I recycled a Birthday card a friend sent that was Store bought....I used some stencils and an embossing folder to alter it and made a Zany card for the Alpha challenge as well.
HERE is my card. Fun way to celebrate Earth Day!

It's been great looking at all your recycling ideas. I've been making cards with recycled materials for 20 years now: guess only about one in a hundred is made with entirely new materials. I've saved wrappers and cartons, packaging and envelopes, clothing tags and gift ribbons. Large envelopes get made into smaller envelopes; pieces of coloured card from all sorts of places become die-cuts; blank areas from business letters are cut into inserts.
There's not a lot of pieces I can't use from a used greeting card: my latest discovery is making new card blanks from them. I mainly take cards which have a picture or motif which doesn't come to the edge of the card front, because the colour doesn't continue round the back and you can adhere patterned paper, or plain paper with a stamped image, leaving a margin all round if you wish. I cut the front off with a half-inch of the back attached, then adhere that to a matching-size piece of card to form a new back (often a left-over itself) - an insert will cover up the join. Of course, if you have a piece of card for the back which is bigger than the used front, you can fold a half-inch over on that and adhere to the front. Even better, if there is an insert in the card, you can remove that (look out for patterned areas on the insert that would make jotter-block sheets and make a box for them, to give as a gift) and just put in a new insert once you've used the card as a blank.
Keep up the good work, everyone!
Lynda

I am playing Challenge cardmaking, and hopefully, doing some catching up...some are old...some are newer. This is a February birthday card for a long-time friend that we've not been able to see during Covid!
Recycle item: saved the gold foil envelope liner and used it for my die-cut scalloped oval sentiment mat layer.
Here is my card: Birthday Wishes for a Friend!
