Default WCW001 - Watercolor Wednesday First Post June 3, 2020

Date: June 3, 2020
Challenge: Watercolor Wednesday
Keyword: WCW001

Technique: Watercolor Look Ink Smooshed

Hello all. Welcome to our newest challenge Watercolor Wednesday.

This has been in the works for awhile and I am happy to say that we are live today for our first challenge.

The team. Other than myself, we have Linda Paider (Holstein), Angela Bode (ohmypaper!) and Brenda O'Rear (Benzi), a group of ultra talented ladies.

We will each take one Wednesday for our posts, going in the order above. For 5th Wednesday that come up we will have special guests.

Our goal is to have fun of course, and learn about watercolor while doing so. We will offer techniques, link you to videos and even offer line drawings from time to time.

What you may need other than watercolor paper and a paint brush. It would be helpful to have Frisket/Masking Fluid, Graphite paper (for tracing), a knead-able gray eraser as it will not damage the paper and is used to remove pencil marks and of course watercolors. That is not to say you have to run out and buy watercolors, you can use your ink pads and most know for watercolour. There are many pens that can be used for watercolor like Nuvo Aqua Flow Pens, which I use a lot. I also have my watercolor palette that I will use. Use what makes you comfortable.

2 Easy 'Watercolour Look' Ink Smooshed Floral Cards! - YouTube

If you do not have access to videos the process is to put some colour down on your work surface and spritz with water. Using a piece of acetate roll the acetate in the color then transfer it to your paper. I stamped my image first and applied the color before die cutting the flowers. I added extra color to the darker flower for contrast.

I also used the technique on my card base along with splatters. Hint for splatters, the smaller the brush the smaller the splatter. I use a #4 brush most often.

Could you give some recommendations on what sizes of brushes to start with? I’m super excited about this new challenge. Learning more about watercoloring has been on my bucket list for 2020.

For those wondering about brushes, my art teacher has always said, buy the best you can afford when it comes to paper and brushes.
I personally use Escoda and DaVinci Round Sable brushes in sizes #4, #6, #8 for my cards. I love them both and lucky for those in the USA they are not as expensive for you as they are here in Canada. Hence I order from England, getting them much cheaper.
You can buy synthetic brushes for much cheaper than Sable and many of them paint beautifully. It is something you need to try out. If you are able during this time, visit an art store and try some brushes out to see what is comfortable for you.
I have personally found my brushes make a big difference.

I agree with Kia about the brushes. One has to think what you are using them for, coloring stamped images, which can be small, or venture out and hand draw larger images. The comment about buying the best brush you can afford is great advice. My thinking is you don't need a lot of brushes. Through trial and error I use two brushes, 4 and a 6 round. They are silver black velvet. Many stampers use the water brushes and have great success. There are some great videos on brushes that can be helpful. Just have fun.

Thank you.

I will start with a better 4 & 6 brush. The only ones I have are a cheap set I bought for a DTGD challenge a few years ago.

Congratulations on putting your heads and talents together in this new exciting challenge. I admire the team so much and I will definitely look forward to Wednesdays even more now. Question: Since watercolor and stamping is your focus, do you want to keep it pure like that or is adding other media okay? With thanks from Lori "Artzadoni"

Hi Lori thank you for your question. We would like to keep the main focus on watercolor. So, there could be the main piece being watercolor with a background done in another media. As long as the focus is watercolor.

Hunh, it looks like this gives you a lot of control where the colors end up.

for something like this in the past I have nearly always turned the card stock upside down on the puddles and just ended up with what ever, so this is interesting to me how much control she had in her video of where the color ends up in the background.

( now, I am wondering if I have any stray plastic to play with haha)

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I will keep trying. I am still hoping that one of the 5000 employees of Internet Brands can work out how to fix the site issues.

I made a 4x4 panel for a scrapbook page. Mt background was smooshing with acrylic piece with inks. My pop up flower is done by rubbing my watercolor crayons on an acrylic block, spritzing with water and then applying it with the acrylic sheet as well as brushes.
There isn’t a gallery yet for my new SU stamp set, I’ll have to adjust that later.

I had to repost, I made a mistake in my posting in the gallery, it’s correct now for this challenge. But I don’t know if I got the right gallery name for the technique.

I'm very excited about the new challenge, not sure I've ever been here from the beginning, except for maybe the MIX. I did also add in the WT challenge, using bleach, hope that's ok. Thanks for getting this together. I have very little experience with watercolor, the team obviously has a lot, I'll do the best I can.

I am so excited about this new challenge. Watercolor is a total mystery to me. I have enough watercolor supplies for 3 people and still I remain clueless how to use them. Looking forward to many more WCW challenges.

Here is my 1st WCW: SHIPWRECK. Which pretty much describes my watercolor knowledge.

Hi!
I searched for this when I noted Jean had commented about it in one of her multi-challenge cards. I am SO excited for Watercolor Wednesday! I don't think I have used acetate for smooshing before (I have used other ways to get similar outcome) So much fun (and more control than what I've used before.) I ended up with 8 cards, and am sharing my top 2 favorites here.

Thanks so much for looking!

Oh My Goodness Kia, Linda, Angie and Brenda, this is amazing and so exciting. I don't know how I missed it given that I Favorited Susies and Shirl's cards from this challenge??? clueless I guess.

I discovered it via Challenge Chat 2020, so thanks Angie. I might also add I've only just discovered challenge chat, bit slow I guess.

I love watercolour but am a complete novice so I'm really looking forward to lots of tips and tutorials.

I have changed over to water colouring images for VSN cards because it is so quick. I haven't stopped using Copic, I'm pretty darn quick with Copic too. Five pens in one hand and I rarely get them out of order.....unless I've had a glass of wine lol

I'm off to give this challenge a go and use it for the Teapot Challenge, then wait for tomorrow afternoon to see what you have in store for the second one, so, so excited.
