Default Sizzix dies

Just have to vent. I recently paid $4.00 at a garage sale, for a Sizzix Phrase, Happy Birthday #3.......Totally annoying as little bits of the c.s. stays stuck throughout the whole phrase in the die itself. I tried my Spellbinders tool in one to go over it, but nothing. Thinking of just throwing it away as it is way more trouble than what it is worth. And just stick to buying dies that are good like Penny Black, Memory Box etc.

Shirl, all is not lost! For dies like that I use special release paper in between the die and cardstock and nothing sticks. It's like unwaxed wax paper. Some people use a piece of plastic grocery bag or wax paper for the same purpose. (Others say wax paper - with wax, that is - is not good for dies.)

Here's the paper I use: Couture Creations Quick Release Die Paper - Marco's Paper

Other shops have it too. I love it and only use it on those dies that grab on and won't let go.

Thank you bjeans! And for providing that link. I just have wax paper, and I have heard that some people say it is not good for the dies, but I am going to try it anyways. I will go fish that die out of my round file, lol......

I will ask about this paper at the local shops. I have never noticed it but that does not mean they don't have it. Otherwise I can order it. Thank you so much.

I love it. Most dies don't need it, so it lasts a really long time. It's two packs, and I cut off a piece a little larger than the die so there's little waste. Unused cut-offs are put in an envelope to use down the road unless they're absurdly small. But I've even used a small scrap just at an edge of a die so I can more easily grab the die to remove it.

Fingers crossed and post what happens!

Close to 16-1/2 feet in a roll and 6" wide. So almost 33 feet.

Once in a blue moon I've used the release paper since it comes out die cut too, of course! It's translucent and has writing on it and can make some interesting little die cuts or shadows of die cuts.

It seems thinner than wax paper, though maybe that's because it's not waxed. I haven't compared side by side. But will now!

It worked not bad, but I think I will keep an eye out for this quick release paper!

Wonder what's so wrong with wax paper? I use it on all my detailed dies and haven't had a problem with the dies. I've never seen the release paper. Is that any thing like freezer paper that's glossy/waxy on one side and matte on the other?

Not waxy or glossy, super thin and easy to tear/cut but strong.IOW, not like tissue paper. Freezer paper is much thicker too.

I don't know why wax paper would be bad; just have seen videos/blogs occasionally saying not to use it. That doesn't mean it is bad though!

Maybe the release paper is used for some other purpose elsewhere, and is repackaged for us more expensively. It reminds me a bit of unwaxed deli paper, but the only deli paper I have is wrapped around Swiss cheese. I just felt it but it's cold and I couldn't tell. lol I'll have to ask for a couple of sheets next time I'm at Whole Foods to compare. But I think the release paper is thinner.

Since I paid about $5.00 ages ago and it works well, I'm not on a mission to find anything else, but of course now you made me curious!

I've heard people talk about buying deli paper. Maybe it was for that. My memory is good, its just short. I've heard others say not to use wax paper, as for me, its cheap and it works and its all I have, so I'll just keep using it. They may let you order a box of deli paper if you like it.

Here's someone's little video about it. At about 3:20 she shows how you get the second die cut out of the release paper.

If whatever someone is doing is working for them, there's no reason to change. This just is the solution that's been spot on for me.

LOL Unwaxed deli paper is neat for Gelli plating. I had some but used it up. : )

Cool video. Of course another product I need.

Maybe it was a gelli print discussion I was thinking about with the deli paper.

I forgot about this. I saw her video a long time ago, and as a result bought a box of fragrance free dryer sheets. I had forgotten all about using them. Thanks for reminding me!

I've used the wax paper on a couple of dies, so when I read here it might not be good with dies, I went searching. Found this video by Mike Dywan of Cheery Lynn dies on shimming and maintaining your dies, which goes into why wax paper isn't good for dies. Live and learn. A substitute for wax paper is the plastic bags products come in (like groceries). Shirl, if you try a plastic bag, let us know if that helped. Thanks for bringing this up.

I find the dryer sheet method to be "the cat's meow"! Works like a charm.

I will ask about this paper at the local shops. I have never noticed it but that does not mean they don't have it. Otherwise I can order it. Thank you so much.

Stop by your local grocery store that has a bakery. They typically have 6x6 sheets of bakers tissue for customers to use to self serve donuts, etc. Buy a donut  and take a clean tissue home to try. I guranteee they are the bomb! Then go back to the bakery and ask if you can buy a box. My local Albertsons sold me a nice box of them for $5. Work like a charm and I have found I like them better than the commercial release paper (it's a tad too thin and gets static and sticks to stuff when it come off - uck!)

Your "ick!" is my yum. (Well, the donut would be a yum too.) I even use the release paper for an extra die cut - very ethereal. It's never staticky but maybe because my plates are wiped down with a dryer sheet occasionally since even the bits of cardstock get staticky otherwise.

Susy, thank you, I am just right now, playing with wax paper and dryer sheets and my butterfly thinlits die. I think the dryer sheets work for the thinlits. I will do as you say for the sizzlit die to see if it works better. For my sizzlit die, I just used brand new cutting plates and reg. SU cardstock, and it is still not coming out nicely as in tearing a bit when I am trying to pull the happy birthday out. And it is pretty much going to not be used at all if I don't find satisfaction with your suggestion. We don't have an Albertson's in Canada, but hopefully will be able to do this in one of our grocery stores. And I will be going to the states fairly soon if I cannot find suitable here. Otherwise I am pitching the blessed thing, lol.

Shirl, you're putting a piece of wax paper or dryer sheet between the cardstock and the die? Sometimes really intricate dies do hold tightly on to cardstock but those should help.

Yes, I did try a piece of plastic bag and ran it through. Then another try I used the wax. Still not working well.

Whoa how did I not know about these tips?! Wow!

Has anyone tried parchment paper? I have parchment and it seems similar to the quick release paper in the video.

Culinary parchment paper is stiffer & heftier than the quick release paper. That being said, what would be the harm in trying it? I would run the sandwich through the BS with the parchment paper and no cardstock, just to see how it performs. Then next time through, add the cardstock into to sandwich with the parchment. Let us know the results!

I have two types of parchment paper and one that isn't but feels similar and will try them. It may depend on brand.

Literally today a packet of parchment paper arrived from Gelli Arts, the Gelli plate people It feels similar the release paper though may be a tad heavier (I'm not in my crafting room to check.)

Another type is unbleached parchment on a roll.

The third is a "natural" food paper liner, 12x12 sheets.

It's thunder storming and lights are going off and on but tonight or tomorrow I'll try them.

Thanks for posting the Youtube video on the dryer sheet technique. I was using the Tim Holtz Globe and it was doing fine at first and then after about 20 cuts the paper was starting to stick and tear. Used the dryer sheet technique and it was like a small miracle. :p Thanks again.
