I have spent the last couple of days going through all my ragtag water colour pencils to so I could decide once and for all which ones to buy a complete set of. I decided that the Derwents were far and away the most beautiful results. The colours were beautiful, translucent and bright, while others were slight muddy and greyish or dull. So I drove an hour to my closest Michaels (whine) and bought a set of 36. Got them home, and being fairly obsessive immediately tried the old against the new. The new ones (I believe I saw somewhere on line in the past couple of days that they have been reformulated - the new ones look different....the casing is dark blue rather than light blue and they have different details on them) have the same muddy, greyish appearance as the ones I rejected in favour of the Derwents. I am SO disappointed.....can anyone shed any light on this for me? Also, can you tell me what your faves are, because obviously I have to start researching again. I called the manager at Mike's and thank goodness he said they would take them back. BTW....same watercolour paper and ink for stamping in all my tests.
Thanks in advance for any insight/advice.

My 2 cents ;) I have both and the bright ones are the Inktense. Watercolor ones have a different formula that make them moe opaque and nothing like the Inktense ones.
Hope this helps.

UGH, so frustrating! I have the older turquoise-bodied ones and I'm really happy with them, along with all the other Derwent products I've amassed... so sorry you are having trouble. Obviously not user error, either, since you're doing the same thing with both. How bizarre! Sorry I don't have any of the dark-bodied ones to give an opinion on the difference.
I have the full set of Derwents but as I wear them down I am replacing them slowly with Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils. They are so vibrant and creamy - love working with them.
Now I'm curious how you prefer to use them... pencil to paper first, then blend? scribble a palette? or pick pigment from the pencil with a brush, then paint?
Thanks so much Giovana....Inktense are certainly on my radar. In fact, it was the link in this week's Weekly Inkling that got me started on all this. It's here if your interested.

Hi Dini....well....this is really quite bizarre...I'm starting to question my sanity....lol. But I have to say that in addition to my own testing I did look at some reviews and they were ALL good....so that contributed to my decision. Looking at that review now after using them, I'm thinking 'what the heck'? To answer your question, I use pencil to paper, then blend. If you are replacing your Derwents with Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer I assume they're even better?? Thanks so much for your input!

Would you believe it turned out to be THAT colour only?? Because I was going to take them back, I didn't want to use them for any more tests, but it became irresistable so I started testing other colours. They're fine. Now, so you don't think I'm crazy, here's a picture of the colour that came out so poorly (it's Deep Vermillion btw)

Hi Dini....thanks again for taking the time to give me a hand. To be honest, it was when I read the review you linked me too that was just SO glowing and specifically talked about the old versus the new, that made me think something was just not right. That's why I decided to try the other ones and thank goodness I did. I think maybe there's something on the tip of that one pencil that is wearing off. Also, (this is also really wierd) the tip of one of the OTHER pencils in the set was broken off....and there was no sign of it in the box....so I'm starting to thinking maybe I got a repackaged set?? Anyway I'm glad I didn't take them back because I really like them, although, of course, I'm now going to check out the Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer....lol!
Thanks again

AND the icing on the cake was - I told my husband "I did something impulsive" and explained what a good deal it was, and he said, "But you didn't buy it yet?" and when I told him I had, he said, "Good." Wheeeee!
