Bone Folders
Hi there! I am pretty new to the forum and also the whole craft of card making. I need a bone folder and I was wondering if any ol' one will do, or if there is a particular brand you like or qualities I should look for. I have access to Michael's, Joann, and online sites of course.
I'm open to any recs! Thanks a bunch!

i don't use a bone folder per se. i use a nylon scraper from the Pampered Chef as a bone folder. they are the little brown plastic squares used for scraping the stone bakeware they sell. you can get 3 of them for 2.75 or you may have one already if you own any of their stoneware. they work just fine and i wouldn't use anything else!!

I think mines by ProvoCraft, and it's the same one that SU sells(or used too..as mine is several yrs old now.) I did not see a difference in them, SU wanted $4,50 at the time(I think they are even more expensive now) but I think I only gave like $3. Just check your local stores, and see which one FEELS the best in your hand! Hahaha. Karen

I got mine at hobby lobby for only like 3.99 or so. I like it, never had any problems with it. Don't know that there is a lot of difference in the ones out there. I did without one for a long time...thought I didn't need that, I can fold cards on my own...made SUCH a difference and a crisp crease when I got one! Have fun and good luck!

I have a Martha Stewart bone folder, I got mine at Michaels using the 40%coupon. Walmart sells her brand too! Works great for me.

The thing I'd suggest is getting one that is straight vs. curved. I use mine a lot for burnishing and that can't be done with a curved bone folder.
I have a good friend who has only the curved one and it's frustrating for her. So, good friend that I am, I just treated her to one from Stampin' Up! after her recent workshop.:-D

Well, sure you can. I do.
The only one I've ever bought came from Archiver's about a gazillion years ago, I've never been in love with it - but it's fine for my purposes. I have heard that teflon coated ones won't leave a shiny folded edge (which would be nice) but I've never felt the need to shell out $$ for a tool I already have!

I have the SU one and I have the Martha Stewart one. I like the Martha Stewart one because it has a curve on one end for your finger while the rest is straight. It works the best and feels the most natural. It is a nice size too.

I have one from ProvoCraft and yes it was only $3 but its a cheap piece of plastic. I bought on from Stampin Up and love it! It feels so nice in my hand and runs so smooth on the card stock. I think it is worth every penny!

I like the teflon one I bought from Ellen Hutson's store. It was a bit pricier, but doesn't leave shiny marks or freak me out about using an animal's bone (just my hang-up I know).

I have the Ranger Inkssentials 5" Paper Creaser folding and scoring tool - the curved one - I love how it scores, the end is just the right thickness. Like asuncionshija, I also use it to smooth down my CS after scoring with no problems.

I got mine at Michaels a long time ago. My advice would be to buy the best quality one you can. I bought a cheaper one first and it wasn't comfortable to use, the edges were too sharp and it was too light weight. Used a friend's and it was so much nicer to use so I went back and bought a better quality one. It is something I use with every card so worth spending a little more on. Plus you can use you r coupon at mikes

I have one that I got at Mike's with a coupon - I think it was around $6 or $7 before coupon and I like that one quite a bit.
I also picked up a Martha Stewart one (because on some of my tools I must have back-ups) and really like that one as well - enough that I went to Walmart and bought another one to use at work. The one from Walmart was a little cheaper regular price, and was a pretty pale green color. The one from Michael's was less expensive once the coupon was applied, and came with a plastic storage pouch (which I think I've already thrown out)

I had the ProvoCraft one and didn't like it. The end kept flattening out. My hubby bought me the Cricut tool kit for Christmas and I love the one that comes in it.

What ever one you decide on getting, MAKE SURE that it is not PLASTIC!!! it will not last. The bone is a little bit more $ but you will never have to buy another one! Mine is from SU and I LOVE IT!

I use a teflon pot scrubber as even the real "bone" folder can leave a shiny mark on some carstock. There is a teflon bone folder that cost $25 and it works exactly like the little pot scrubbers. I got mine at a kitchen store for $2.

Two criteria for a folding device: 1. If it is plastic, test it first to make sure any color doesn't transfer to the item you are folding, and 2. It feels good in your hand.
I have a white bone folder (unknown brand, but it looks like the Stampin Up one) that I've had for years and I love. I mislaid it recently and bought a MS one, don't like it so much. Luckily I found my original one.
In a pinch you can use a plastic letter opener, pretty much anything with a rounded edge. A hundred years ago, I had a job making blueprints of mechanical drawings. They require a certain folding technique. When I was folding just using my hands to crease the paper, I would have lots of paper cuts. I took the label off of a rubber cement jar and used the side of the jar to crease the blueprints. It fit nicely in my hand without having to grip tightly. Folding for 8 hours a day can be pretty tiresome, but once I started using the glass jar, no more paper cuts and a beautifully folded product. I used that jar for probably 5 years.

You have to make sure what that bone is really made of. I purchased one from MFT and it's never left any shiny mark. They have a rectangle shaped one that I love. I did try the big box but they left marks.

After making dark purple wedding invitations for our son's wedding, I asked for a teflon bone folder for Christmas. Love it. never have to worry about a shiny crease again. Tip: if you are working with a dark cardstock and you find this shine on your creases, just fold your card by hand and place it under a teflon mat and use any bone folder on top. Gets by in a pinch. Scoring the card at first isn't when the shine appears, it's when you are pressing
the crease.
