Pearl Ex is a powdered pigment. You will need a binder to keep it from coming off the paper. For example, you would need to mix it with water and gum arabic or mix it with acrylic paint to make a liquid that will stick to paper.

Powdered Pearls is a powdered pigment with the binder already in it. It only needs water added to stick. I hope this makes sense.

BTW, if you have Pearl Ex, you can make your own Perfect Pearls. Just mix Gum Arabic with the Pearl Ex and let it dry to a cake. Then you can "paint" the Pearl Ex on with a damp watercolor brush. When I did this, I bought a small cupped pallet from the painint aisle at the art supply store where I got the Gum Arabic and that way I could make up an entire pallet of Perfect Pearls from all of my Pearl Ex colors.

I think you need the powder for this as the perfect pearls are a cake whereas the pearlex is in powder form and as the girls stated above to get pearlex to be like perfect pearls you need to mix it with a binder.

I have a couple of sets of Perfect Pearls as well as Pearl Ex, and to look at them in their containers, they're identical loose powders. The only difference is that if I use an aqua brush to paint with them, Perfect Pearls stay "stuck" once the water dries. With Pearl Ex, once the water dries, the powder falls off unless you use some sort of fixative. I've used my Perfect Pearls for all kinds of techniques that call for Pearl Ex, and they work just fine. So if you have the Perfect Pearls that are loose powder (the sets come with those two really nice brushes), they'll work for these ornaments.

Wow. I don't think I've ever use the letter P that many times in one paragraph.

And by the way - thank you for that tutorial. I need to try those!

I to use the Perfect Pearls Powders. Joannes or Michaels sells these these. Also TAC does to in their catalog. You can also stamp with Versamark and then brush the PP over that and it sticks just fine. You do not have to use any water or waterbrush to do this.

Perfect Pearls are a loose powder. I don't know about PearlEx, but Perfect Pearls can be purchased open stock. I have never seen PearlEx except in packages of multiple powders. (Perhaps it's out there in open stock and I'm not getting around much). With Perfect Pearls, you can just get the colors you want, which can be a real money saver. (Perfect Pearls does come in packages of four, too.)
