Default Stencils

Hi all,

I am still in the process of setting up my studio/office at my new place. I've been playing with old products that I purchased many years ago and I'm so glad I kept them. I stop and play with them as I settle into my happy place. Currently I'm playing with stencils, watercolors, and acrylic inks ... I luv them! Anyhow...
Please tell me, how do you store your 6x6 and larger stencils and unmounted backgrounds?
What type of re-positional adhesives do you use to adhere your stencils?

The largest stencils I have are 6" square; I keep them in clear sleeves in a desk drawer because I only have a few.

Usually I am only using part of the stencil on the front of an A2 card, so I use post-its to hold the stencil in place. A couple of my stencils came with temporary adhesive so they work great. I'm thinking of trying a spray-type removable adhesive; seems like that would be the best way to get even coverage.

I have my stencils in hanging file folders in a filing cabinet - they're separated by category (patterns, botanicals, architecture, etc.). I only had two that were 12" and don't fit the file, and I had them hanging on the wall... I don't have a good solution for those yet.

Temporary spray adhesive is a great idea - I have one from Krylon that works well.

I store my big ones on 12 by 12 sheet protectors in a notebook. Notice I said ON? I use that Krylon spray that Dina K. has and just stick them on the outside of the sheet. I outline most of the stencil on 12 by 12 paper and put it inside the sheet protector so I know where they belong. The smaller ones go in pocket type sheet protectors that somewhat fit the size of the stencils.

I don't use them often but it is nice to get them out and play with them again.

I bought one of those document folders with loads of clear pages in to store mine. From Staples, I think.I don't have any larger than about 6"x6", although there are a few A4 size I cut myself with my Silhouette.

I store my 6x6 stencils (have 50+ of them) in a 8x10 photo book with plastic top loading pages. I just slip them in the page..some have two or more in each side. No particular order, I just flip through and group like ones together. I have a plastic storage (3 drawer) unit that I have one drawer for 12x12..I don't have many of that size and don't use them often.
I usually hold my stencils down by hand or use Post-It tape, or painters tape. This system works great for me. I also have a reference notebook that is a photo copy of each stencil that I refer to for planning purposes (and so I don't purchase duplicates!)
I am pretty OCD and clean all my stencils quickly after each use; toss them in my laundry sink with some warm water and a couple drops of Murphy's Soap. This works great until I am done with my project and I can wash/dry them all.

I leave them in the package they came in, but slip some 65# black cardstock behind them so the pattern really shows and then they are in a plastic box with theme dividers like my dies in pockets are and my EFs. I have my metal stencils in with them too. I just thumb through the section. Trim off excess packaging material so it's really just the 6 x6 size. I have excel list of them so I dont duplicate.

I am considering if I would get the 6 x 6 pockets at Simon Says stamp if I find what I have is falling apart but they are so light so far it works.

LMAO me too! I am going to use Shazsilverwolf's method, because it's getting me frustrated going through them every time I'm looking for one. Sometimes the packages stick together making it harder. I do what wavejumper does, and it worked until my stock grew. I'm still going to leave them in the packaging though, I'll just put them in the page protectors.

I have a 3 ring binder. Added Page protectors. And slid a colored piece of paper into each. So every stencil goes into one side.
