I have used Distress Stickles http://www.timholtz.com/stickles.htm
in the original brown and gray-brown Distress colors to get the effect of rust and aged metal on paper for mixed media collage. Distress stickles aren't glittery like regular stickles. I've also used them on steampunk style Halloween cards.

Are you talking about the Paper Artsy rusting powder? I bought it but haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for this. I watched the video. Is that VerDay Patina salt and vinegar? It looks like the patina is key to the effect, and I've heard you can do that with salt and vinegar but I don't know the proportios.

From my understanding there are different materials in each paint that reacts to the activator spray.

The rust one I use the most.

4 parts white household vinegar
1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/2 part table salt

Mix in a spray bottle, making sure the salt is completely dissolved.

Spray your metal object completely. Allow to dry thoroughly. You can repeat the process until you achieve the amount of aging you like.

Has anyone just used the VerDay paints to make metallic card stock. How does that compare to what SU is selling right now. I was thinking the paint might be great because SU will probably only offer the metallic card stock for a limited time as things come and go.

OP, are you asking how to actually patina metal, or just get a faux metallic look to a card? I have had excellent luck making a paste from powdered mustard and water, painting it on the metal piece in desired areas; then lay the piece onto a fabric/string "hammock in a plastic container over paper towels sprayed with ammonia salt mixture (2-3 tablespoons salt into a quart of water in a spray bottle; spray metal piece with a salt solution (play with the ratio), sprinkle with more salt, and close the lid. Respray every hour 4-5 times until desired effect is reached. Rinse in cold water and pat dry.

A faux metallic look using paper is another process that can be achieved many ways.

Paper Artsy is doing a whole series on rusting on its blog. Today's is really good because it shows how well different elements and styles can work together when they're rusted. PaperArtsy
