I always check the manufacturer’s site for marker storage, and if I don’t see it, email them, though once in a while it’s clear the rep is guessing. Here’s what the Copics folks say:
“Basically it would make no big difference whether you store your markers either upright or on their side as long as the ink is nearly-filled, but we recommend you to keep Copic flat. In our pre-made sets, markers are placed with the “Super Brush” nib side up.”
ETA - sorry about the weird coding about the font and background, etc; it doesn’t show up when I type, just after posting. Just ignore. I’m seeing some other odd stuff after people post.
All my markers are waterbased, two-ended brush markers (la plume, tombo, crafter’s choice). They live in my blue plastic Snoopy lunch box from the 1970s. I store the lunchbox so that the markers are horizontal.
I do need to figure out a way to keep them grouped by major color categories, so it’s easier to use them. Rubber bands would probably do the trick
Mine are in a Totally Tiffany Denise bag. It had two dividers that can be used like shelves. It’s on its side so the shelves don’t sag since it’s full.
When I took the Copic certification class, we were told that you can store alcohol markers either horizontally or vertically. It really doesn't matter.
I've heard that as well (either way is fine). But I did notice in the advice shared from the company in the post above that they say as long as the marker is almost full. I'm guessing that would mean there is enough in the barrel to reach the inserted part of both nibs… If there is less than "almost full", I suppose it could damage the nib not getting ink?
I store my Copics in empty Crystal Light containers. Perfect for keeping them together as there is a snap on lid. I keep them in a horizontal position. My Bic Mark-It markers are stored in an upright position in their plastic container. This keeps the ink in the marker as there is only one end to them. Watercolor markers are stored in the upright position, too, with the marker side down to keep it wet.

Now I want lemonade... What a neat idea.
BTW, coincidentally Organize More sent out an email today with a 10% code for three items, including their marker holder.
Whether the markers are Alcohol, or water based, brush markers or normal markers, I store then horizontally. I think the ONLY markers I store upright are markers like Sharpies.
I store my copics, tombows, etc. horizontally in Really Useful boxes. I put one colour or colour family in each box so easy to choose the colours I want. And the boxes stack really nicely.
All of my markers, Spectrum Noir Alcohol, Spectrum Noir Aqua Painter, Spectrum Noir Sparkle, Chameleon and SU Blends & SU Waterbased, are all stored horizontally in storage racks from. Crafter’s Companion. I like these racks because they can be positioned on an angle so it is easy to see what marker you are looking for. They are very inexpensive too.

All my markers, no matter what kind are stored horizontally. I have them separated by color family in each case using plastic or cardboard boxes that fit in my storage drawers.

I have seen those holders and was wondering about them for my copics. Do you have copics in them also? When i was trying to figure out whether they would work for my copics, I wasn’t sure if they would fit. I have a few spectrum noir, and they are a lot longer then the. Copics, so wondered how easy they were to get out of the hole?

I use the Crafter's Companion holders for all my markers and can stack them up so they do not take up much room and I can see the colors easily and grab them easily.
I can line up the Copics by number and always find what I’m looking for. Now I need more but I’m not ready to buy another stack of six yet!

Keep them tilted down. In general, vertically laying their tips down is the safest technique. Sharpies should, however, be stored horizontally to prevent alcohol from evaporating.

but this makes no sense, a copic is an alcohol marker!? I store mine in 7 cases designed for them and they are vertical. Been sorting them like that for 10 years and never had a problem.

I have many Caio ones stored in the case that fit them and it is vertical. They work fine. They have been this way for 7 or 8 years. I have sketch markers and a few other Caio ones stored horizontal in the Crafter's Companion marker racks along with Spectrum Noir markers. All fit and work well. On the Copic ones, I do not see any difference between the ones stored flat and the ones stored vertical. As long as they are not drying out, they work fine.

When it comes to marker storage, it's a little more tricky because you'll need to figure out what kind of ink your markers use. The safest way is vertically putting their tips down.
I have the Tombow case and they stand vertically in it. My Spectrum Noirs are also in their Spectrum Noir case and they are horizontal. My Zig Watercolor markers I keep in the box that they came in so it can be vertical but I always lay the box on its side so that they are horizontal. I am a little OCD when it comes to how my markers are stored, so that is why I buy the case that the manufacturer designed for them. I couldn't afford Copics so I went with Spectrum Noir. Love them!! I have all 192 pens and the case hold them all.
According to the I Like Markers blog, which was written by a Copic specialist, it doesn't matter which way you store them.
They are sold upright, which would suggest that is an ok way to store them.

I use two sturdy cardboard boxes (that used to hold a new book) for my markers, pens, pencils, etc. They all lie horizontally. I have a couple of hand-cut cardboard inserts for separation. I can see the pen ends easily because the box is longer than the pens. The Spectrum Noir are horizontal in a shoebox, and most of them have dried out anyway. I drip alcohol on the nibs to get them going but it doesn't last. I've got to say, those alcohol markers and alcohol inks were not money well spent for me. I dislike them both. Really that was a coupla hundred dollars down the tubes for me. I do, however, like my other markers and pens very much.
Although stated in each packaging, this is frequently overlooked. Keep your alcohol markers away from heat sources and direct sunshine if you value their longevity.
I store mine horizontally because that’s the easier way for me to organize them. If I was changing to vertical, I’d store them brush nib down to keep it juicy especially if the ink was getting low. But watercolour or water-based brush tip (like an actual paint brush, not a brush nib) markers should ALWAYS be stored vertically to prevent leaks. The flow is so large to these markers that leaks are common. If yours haven’t leaked you are lucky! That’s why they almost always come in a vertical storage case if you buy a set.
