I'm thinking of taking advantage of the 50% off Sizzix deal at Joann.com. I know I have read other threads saying that Big Shot and Big Kick are essentially the same. They are the same price, so just wondering which one you would get and why.
Also, what other accessories should I get to get started? Maybe the multi-purpose platform? Do I need to buy additional cutting pads?
I was looking at the Texture Boutique, but as I understand it, the Big Shot/Big Kick can do embossing too, right? Is there an advantage to the Texture Boutique? If I were to get a separate machine for embossing, should I get the Sizzix Texture Boutique or the Cuttlebug?
I can't answer all of your questions but I can help with a few.
I have the Big Kick simply because at the time it was 50% off at Jo's and they did not carry the Big shot.
Both the kick and shot come with the multi-purpose platform and standard size cutting pads. It will take awhile for you to need new cutting pads.
If you buy any of the longer dies, you will need the extended cutting pads.
You don't need anyting else to use embossing folders. If you want to use embossing plates, you will need a kit (I can't think what it is called, sorry). Mine is purple but they come in other colors depending on where you buy it. Basically it is a hard plastic pad and a foamy type sheet. Sorry I wish my brain could think what they are called but that is the best I can do right now.
Don't know anything about texture boutique. Hope this helps a little.
Thanks, kilroy. I'll hold off on buying extra cutting pads for now.
I have spent several hours reading through that thread and other old posts. It's hard to shift through 1800+ posts and I wasn't able to find a straight forward answer to my questions.
straight talk. if you get a cuttlebug you won't need a big shot/big kick. they the "bug" and the big shot do the same things. the boutique only embosses. if you don't want to die cut, get the boutique. cuttlebug and big shot/big kick both emboss. i recommend the big shot (which is what i have). if you only have a small storage area, the cuttlebug would be your best bet.
I have a Big Shot and love it. I use it all the time. I got it from SU during sale-a-bration last year because it ended up being a great deal. I got the machine, a few dies, texture plates, etc. AND got the free $$ for host benefits AND got the SAB goodies.
I did look briefly at the CB and BK, but opted for this one instead. It is a little bigger than the CB and with the cutting platform seemed easier to use. I didn't care for the look or feel of the BK - seemed more cheaply made, but that may not be the case.
I just ordered a new set of cutting plates to have on hand for when I need them. I am always careful to cut only on one plate, so trying to prolong their life that way.
