I just purchased this trimmer. I knew before I purchased it that one of the flaws of this trimmer was the ruler is missing at the fold line of the trimmer. For those of you who own this trimmer have you been able to find a way to overcome this problem?
I'd probably measure by subtracting. For example, if I wanted to cut the 11-inch side down to 4.25 inches I'd align the edge at 6.75 since 4.25+6.75 = 11
Additionally, I would measure something that is the length of the "unmarked" area and make a mark with a Sharpie-type marker.
Thank you for your suggestions! I am thinking about trying to also find a way to attach a removable ruler that will sit across the area without the markings. My last trimmer had a similar design flaw but it was at a less used marking and didn't seem to be quite as wide of a gap.
I use this trimmer a LOT! Not having those markings between 5 1/2 and 6 1/8 really never bothered me all that much. I would always just "wing" it. But, now that you mentioned it, I did what I think is a helpful improvement. From Hobby Lobby, in the sewing department, I had gotten a thin, clear, vinyl grid mat which didn't cost much. It has 1/8 inch markings. It was 12 inches by about 18 inches. I had cut it to fit in my MISTI, which then became 6 x 8 pieces so that I could line up words, etc. Well, since your post, I cut off an edge, about 1/4 " wide and 2 1/2 inches long,and taped it to the unmarked area, at the top, above the ridge. It works great! I hope this makes sense to you. I can take a pic, if you need one.
A picture would be great, if you have the time! I think I understand you and it sounds like a great idea. I've been playing around with some masking tape which looks like a tape measure. Surprisingly it is freakishly accurate in the markings, but your idea sounds interesting. Thanks for your help!
Here's a picture of the small strip taped above that ridge. I also showed you the plastic grid sheet. You still have to "eye-ball" the measurement, but it sure works for me.....better than nuttin' there.

Sounds like a good tip, TFS. What happens to your add-on grid when you need to shut the extension arm?
I'm in the "wing it" club with those using Fiskars trimmers that have the fold-up extension. Still using my Fiskars, though. I prefer them to the others.
Just saw a question about what happens to my add-on grid when I fold the cutter up. Well, I never fold it up. It stays right on my work table. You would have to remove the taped piece and re-tape it back on later which would be easy to do. Anyhoo, I love, love this cutter for another reason besides cutting. Because it sits an inch off of the table, when I am working on a project, I find that I can put cut-out items or other little things under it for safe keeping so I don't "lose" them. I don't like looking for little parts of things that can get easily misplaced under piles of paper, ribbon, or whatever, or fall on the floor, etc.
