DId you know you can Die cut Felt!

I didn't until one day last week I was at a scrapbooking store and I was looking for a black felt swirl to put on a frame. I at first found something but then went to use it and took of the backing just for it to stick all together and ruin. I was so bummed. I went back to the store to purchase another and they were all out. bummed again and just about to leave the store. The woman working there mentioned buying some felt and using their swirl die cut. I was stunned. I can't believe I didn't know you could die cut felt. Just goes to show you, you're never to old to learn something new. Yeah It worked and this project was saved. yeap .... a few years back I made a couple of those felt board things that kids play with ... I cut used my sizzix paper dolls and other dies to create various different things to use on the felt board ... I was very happy with the results.

If you attend a class on either the BIGkick or Cuttlebug you will learn that you can cut ANYTHING with the BIGkick that you can cut with scissors. It's the first thing I tell students when I begin a class. They have no idea they can use their BIGkick or Cuttlebug to make items other than just paper things. Use it to die cut shapes or figures for embellishing your clothing or home decor. I use my BIGkick and Cuttlebug everyday for lots of things.
It's terrific! There is no end to what you can do with either of these machines. That's why I am such a fan of them over the ones that can only cut paper. (Yes, I do have the Cricut, but used exclusively for paper crafting.)

At Wal-mart you can buy felt with adhesive on the back of it already. Love that stuff!

Wow, I just got a cuttlebug for Christmas and I have always wanted to buy the SU felt flowers...I just love them. I have taught preschool and kindergarten for years and have many felt board stories...(like 300) yes, I was obsessed but the kids' love them. Anyway, the little felt flowers are so sweet and go right to my heart because of my love for felt stories. I would have never guessed cuttlebug would cut felt. I haven't bought the SU flowers due to cost and have looked everywhere for them cheaper. LIke Archivers, Micheal's, etc. I will be buying some felt soon. Thanks

I'm loving using felt with the stash of Sizzix dies I accumulated when the original red machine came out.

Question for you ladies tho - my understanding is the sizzlets cannot cut felt or reallly any other material besides paper..is that your experience? SU! has some new tag sizzlets but I am more hesitant to buy them if they only cut paper.

I used some felt with the cuttlebug flowers die cut and made cute barrettes for my daughter. I also found some super cute felt coasters at Mike's that had flowers on them. I was able to cut them apart and use the flowers on a little bag. I am also going to use them on a card. They have several different styles.

I tried using a cuttlebug die to cut felt and it didn't cut all the way through. I so wanted to be able to cut felt, but I'll have to get a different die I guess. :(

I cut some glitter felt at Christmas with the snowflake die and put those on my Christmas tree or you could put them on packages too!!

Are the cuttlebug dies steel-rule ones? I don't know...I don't have any of them...just the embossing folders.

A couple of tips for cutting felt with the cuttlebug dies:

Add a piece of cardstock or chipboard behind the felt (die face up, then felt, then cardstock) - it helps give a cleaner cut.

Crank through once, then crank backwards to run it through a second time without moving the sandwich.

I've also found that the felt with the adhesive backing tends to cut better than plain felt.

Hey, some more great ideas with cuttlebug and felt! Thanks for the tips on getting the dies to cut the felt....I wish the sticky back had better colors...mainly red, black and white here at Wal-Mart. Do Micheal's or Hobby Lobby have other sticky back felt colors that would better match SU colors?

I made beautiful 4 inch snowflakes this winter with my Sizzix die out of felt (the adhesive backed sheets from Michael's cut best) and out of copper sheets I found for metal crafting (also from Michael's). The balsm wood worked but was hard on the die so I won't try that again.

Thanks for all of the tips on using felt in the cuttlebug. I'm definitely going to be trying this out.

Another thing you can do with felt is to emboss it. I used black Midnight Black VersaMagic and clear embossing powder. The flowers turned out so nice and shiny. The black covered any color of felt! With these tips I now can make my own flowers own flowers and then emboss them.

I just got a Cuttlebug for Christmas and am new to die cutting. I am excited about cutting felt and other materials, but don't want to hurt my machine or dies.

How do I know if a die is a steel rule die or not? :confused:

So far, I have some Spellbinder dies, some Cuttlebug dies, and a Sizzlit die set. Is there a way they look, or do you just have to know that they are a steel rule die??

I'll bet you can make that white felt any color you like with Copic alcohol markers, especially if you have the airbrush system.

Seems like you could also sponge it whatever inkpad color you like and get custom Stampin' Up! felt colors!! Perhaps a quick light heat-set to fix the color, not holding the embossing gun too close - wouldn't want to melt the synthetic felt.

i have a quickutz and cuttlebug., thanks for this thread, gonna have to buy some dies now and try it out. I have nesties, wonder if it would work and look cute??

Yes, the large nesties work for sure (haven't tried any of the smaller detailed nesties like snowflakes or flowers). I made some little felt treat pouches for Valentine's Day with my scalloped squares: Felt Valentine Treat Bags by lnl96 at Splitcoaststampers I put a piece of cereal box behind the felt to get a clean cut. HTH!

I've used my Sizzix bigz and originals to cut felt, worked great. I also used a couple of my Spellbinders Nestabilities, but found that the acrylic felt did not work as well for me. I had wool felt and it worked better. The angels are cute, Feline

Also, when die cutting finer fabric, i stop it fraying by using lightweight iron-on interfacing on the fabric before cutting.x

You could try glossy accents. Jennifer McGuire uses that to attach flowers to her card. Or felt glue.
