Default Cuttlebug Winter House

Has anyone had problems with the Cuttlebug Winter House embossing folder? I ordered one from CreativeXpress and it is not embossing very deeply (i.e. the falling snow instead of looking like the dots from the Swiss dots folder, they are flatter and wider. There is significant space between the rooftops and the rest of the house where it should just be a line). I had used my friend's folder before I got mine and there is a huge difference. Also from looking at the cards posted on here using the folder, I can see a big difference. I know it isn't my Cuttlebug because I used my friend's folder in my machine and I am using the same paper.

I emailed Provocraft and they sent me a replacement but that one also is embossing the same way. I emailed them again telling them that I was more than happy to send them a sample from my folder and from my friends but they just said they would send me another folder. Unfortunately, I won't get the folder before Christmas to use on the rest of my cards.

Did you try putting a shim in the machine? It might help with the crispness of the embossing.

I agree with adding a shim to your sandwich ... another piece of cardstock or something and see if that helps. I havent had any problems with mine.

Adding a shim does nothing for it.

I've attached a photo showing my folder and my friend's folder. I rubbed them with crayon to help them show up better.

You can see by the areas that I have a rectangle around that there is significant difference in the folders. There are different size snowflakes on mine whereas on the other they are pretty much a uniform size. Also look at the spaces between the parts of the buildings. Mine are much wider.

I just noticed too that the snowflakes are positioned different on mine compared to my friends--see the top box where the snowflake is positioned in comparison to the chimney smoke. I have to believe that they changed the folder. I even asked if they made changes to the folder but they didn't answer my question. Just said they would send me another one.

Okay, that is just weird!!!! I would call Provocraft and explain it to them ... and if they want to see the difference, email them that picture! I bet they would send you a new embossing folder. I have heard that they have great customer service, but that you should telephone them as opposed to emailing them. Too weird!

Last night since I finally had time to scan a comparison, I did email the picture to the girl that I have been dealing with and who had told me that they were going to send yet another folder. In my email I told her that before she sends me another folder, she needs to actually use the folder herself and if it embosses the way that the other two folders have, then forget it and don't send it to me.

I wonder if I will get an answer to my question about whether they made changes to the folder. It is very obvious that they have but in previous emails, they haven't addressed that question.

I can see the difference in your folder, and your friends. I actually purchased the house a few wks ago, but haven't used it yet, so I was curious as to wether mine matched yours, or your friends. It looks like mine is like your friends. I was a bit concerned, thinking maybe mine was defective too! Whew!! Karen

It is so strange that you got a replacement and it does the exact same thing ... makes you wonder if they did make changes to the folder. In these two pictures, there is an obvious difference ... let us know if you get it figured out! I'm so glad that I have one that works like it should ... good luck!

It looks like you may be embossing harder. (for lack of a better word right now) You're image looks like it was pressed into the paper much deeper causing the more pronounced detail.

What sandwich are you using with the folder??

I am using the same machine, same sandwich (A, B, folder, B) and same paper as I did with my friends.

By looking at mine compared to my friends, you can see that the snowflakes are not in the same places on both of them. I am pretty sure they had to have changed the folders and that it isn't a matter of my machine or the sandwich.

I used that folder as a vellum overlay on my Christmas cards. I used a medium thick vellum, but when I embossed the vellum one at a time, the design cut through. I finally tried doing two sheets of vellum at a time and it worked beautifully.

Shirley, post a copy of your Christmas card. It sounds beautiful. I would never have thought to try to emboss on vellum with any of the embossing folders. What a great idea!! Karen

I had the same problem as Shirley when I used vellum. It cut the vellum, but, duh, I never thought to emboss 2 at a time. Thanks for the great hint Shirley, looking forward to seeing your card.

Another thing you can do if you are only making one card and don't want to emboss another sheet of vellum/cardstock is use two sheets of printer paper and sandwich your vellum in between. This also helps if the cardstock you are using has a white core and you don't want the white to show through. I keep the printer paper with my folder and just use it over and over until it wears out.

That is what I thought. It looks more smooshed. If others are having the issue, then makes you wonder if the folder is just a little thicker than previous versions. Very strange, I hope they figure it out because I want to get that folder for next year's Christmas cards.

I am glad to see that worked. Just as I hit the send button our power went off. We have been in the middle of a really bad snow storm for 8 days now here in Oregon.

A friend of mine and I are having the same problem...smooshed snowflakes and very "unclear" houses. I bought purely because of the cards I saw on here. I'm going to send some feedback...maybe they'll fix it. I tried several shims and lots of the ideas here. Still same result. :-(

Well, I'm in the same boat as all of you with "smooshed" images - I recently purchased mine though an eBay store for next year's Christmas cards. :( I'll be leaving feedback on ProvoCraft's website....

Now I need help! lol!

Below is the email I received from ProvoCraft - so which embossing folder do I request?! Other than Winter House, these are all I have: Snowflakes, Paisley, Bloom Dots and Happy Birthday.
I like Argyle, Bird Call and Haunted Halloween. Does anyone recommend any of these, or a different one??

It reads backwards....
Toni,
We wont be able to replace the Winter House Folder, you can keep the one that you have and we can mail you a different folder of your choice. Let me know what folder you would like for us to send you.

Coralee,
Thank you so much for the quick reply! So am I reading your email correctly in that the Winter House folder can't be replaced and I should choose a DIFFERENT folder?? Or will you send me a replacment Winter House folder? Should I mail this one back to you?? I just want to confirm that I'm understanding correctly.
Thank you!

Hello!
I recently purchased the Cuttlebug "Winter House" embossing folder. While I absolutely love the design and have many ideas in mind for it's use, I feel the folder is not providing results that I had expected. When I have seen other examples of this folder on paper, the snowflakes are small perfect little dots and the houses have a crisp, clear definition. However, when using the folder I purchased, the snowflakes are all indiscriminate in size - some small pinpricks, some larger and less defined. The houses my folder makes also appear "squished" and rounded, not as crisp. Could you let me know if this is what I should expect from this folder??
Thank you!
-Toni

Yikes, I just ordered this embossing folder from an on-line store. I hope I don't get a defective one as well. Has anyone gotten a replacement Winter House folder that actually was better?

I hope that Provocraft can "fix" the folder. I really, really wanted to buy that folder, it is so pretty, but after reading the messages here I decided against it.

Do you have swiss dots? I love that one... very versatile. Not sure if you can still get it though.
I'm impressed that you got a response. I haven't gotten any yet.
Guess I'm just stick.

Doesn't look like it's available anymore. :( I assume I should choose one that's current on their site and I don't see it listed. It sounds very pretty...

Thanks for the suggestion! It's a harder decision than it should be!

Maybe try emailing them again? Or try emailing my contact directly - her email info is included in what I copied in here...

Default winter house folder

And I thought it was just me!!! I'm very unhappy with the house folder as well. I've tried using it on white core paper and it still just looks like a mush-o-something. Nothing really recognizable. I love the snowflake folder, used it a ton for christmas cards. Also use the Happy Birthday folder a lot. I'm also struggling with the lace tree. I'm going to look up cards using that folder for better ideas than what I came up with!! I still love the Cuttlebug, everyone has an "off" product now and again (i.e. Fiscars combo emboss/corner punch...........can NEVER get those to work right!!!). Anyway, thanks for letting me know I'm not the only one with this problem.

Default UPDATE

Jamie from Provocraft called me today. I had emailed her the picture that I posted here just before Christmas and hadn't heard anything back. I was surprised that she called me directly.

She said that she checked the folders that they just ordered in and she said that they are all the same as the one that I have. She doesn't know why the change was made and she even said that the new folder looks cartoonish.

She told me to pick out a different folder since I was not happy with the Winter House. So I am getting the argyle one as a replacement. Fortunately, I will be able to borrow my friend's folder when I want to use Winter House for cards.

She thanked me for bringing this to their attention because they were unaware before I contacted them that changes had been made to the folder. I told her that they would probably be hearing from a lot of people unhappy with the changes that were made to the folder.

I also made her aware that they need to change the picture that is on their site and also the one that is on the packaging to reflect the new "ugly" Winter House.

Good sleuthing Cheryl!

Sounds like Provocraft is doing a good job with customer service and now that they're aware of the problem, perhaps it'll get resolved.

Now that I think of it, I remember reading that the holiday folders were "while supplies last" - so I wonder if they'll be fixing it?

Default Winter house folder

I'm encouraged that Provocraft is willing to step up and acknowledge the problem. I don't expect they will fix for this year but maybe next year . Glad someone followed up on this with the company, now at least we know its not us .

That is truly a strange situation. So happy you brought that to their attention and they are looking into it.

I just received this folder today from www.ucutathome.com, and after seeing this thread, I just now went and checked it out. I'm happy to say that it looks great, just like I've seen on all the pretty cards here on SCS.

If you had your heart set on getting this, she is still showing it available for order here.

I just got my order from Joann's and I got the yucky Winter House as well :(. I liked the original version of this one, the one I got, not so much. I guess I will be contacting Provocraft as well.

Maybe try emailing them again? Or try emailing my contact directly - her email info is included in what I copied in here...
Well, I got my FREE embossing folder from ProvoCraft today - yea! I asked for the Disney Best Friends folders and received them, no questions/problems.

Now does anyone have any suggestions on what to use it for?? I tried searching the gallery and can't find any cards it was used on. It was free; it was cute....

Wow, I can't believe they let you get that duo as your replacement. I was told that I had to pick a folder that was the same price as the Winter House folder so I picked the argyle folder. Now I'm feeling jipped since I am the one who brought the problem to their attention.;)

I see they still have the Winter House on their website. I thought for sure they would have pulled it or at the very least change the picture to reflect the current folder. I had suggested to Jamie at Provocraft that they should change it since it no longer reflects the correct impression from the folder and she said that was a very good idea and she would look into it.
