I have wanted this camera for ever and am ready to buy. Debating whether to spend a little less to get the older (8 megapixel) model, or the current 10mp. Any thoughts from users regarding differences in these - I understand the difference in mp, and that I will probably not need to print large enough to make a difference in quality when jumping from 8 to 10, but wondering about any other features or upgrades that may make it worth spending more for the XTi. I have read several articles and can't find major differences, but of course the sales people want to push the newer, more expensive option...
I have the XT (8mp) and the differences aren't really great enough for me to upgrade to the XTi...I would much rather take the difference in cost and invest in some great glass....
forgot to add....it really isn't the camera that makes a great picture...it's the photographer and the lens...you can have a simple point and shoot and get great pics just as well as someone who has a 12mp camera....
I have the older model (regular Rebel) and its great. Such a huge step up from pretty much any other digital camera.
One thing I considered in deciding between the two is that I'm not a photographer and my untrained eye wouldn't know the difference, so I saved the money I would have spent on the XTi for other things.
Have you tried going to a photography board - the people there would probably be able to give you more things to consider, I would check out the board at two peas. The peeps there are always so helpful.
I debated between the 10 and the 8 as well. My friend is a photographer and she told me that the only difference between the two is if you were standing at the grand canyon and wanted to take a picture of the bottom of the canyon you would need the 10 megapixel. She said for every day use and even heavy zoom the 8 works just as well as the 10. (Even better at times Here's Why: She said the 8 was made to take photos like I take and the 10 was geared more for professional photography for landscapes and stuff. That is what she said anyway.) I bought the 8 and I LOVE IT!!! The pictures are outstanding. The detail is amazing. Hope that helps.
the LCD screen is bigger on the 10MP, but the 8MP had a separate screen to display other info -- and that info is now on the LCD screen. If you look at a picture of the back you will see what I mean.
My DH is a Pro Photographer and when I told him I wanted to invest in the Digi Rebel, he did a little research and I was correct that it was the best choice for us. This was last year and so I bought the 8. He is so impressed with this camera that he even uses it. You know the cliche that a plumbers house always has leaky faucets. Well in my house, my DH NEVER takes pictures. But now he will with my Digi Rebel.
I love my camera.

I am getting the xti --- I did a lot of research and it came down to the fact that the xti is the latest release I want the versatility it offers and I want to be able to do more than just the 4x6 pics I usually take, I want to learn and improve all the time.

My 2 year old XT can print up to poster size without degredation or pixelation. I can go fully manual and be completely creative and have total control over the settings that I shoot at....
I think that it's a great suggestion though to fully investigate the cameras that you are looking at.
check out dpreview or photographyonthenet both of these sites have professional and mommy photogs on the boards...

I got the 10mega xti for Xmas and love it, but I've heard the differences between the 10 and 8 are minimal for regular users. I'd invest in good lenses w/ stabilizer w/ the extra money.
I just got th eXTi for my birthday back in Feb, and another feature that the XTi has that the XT doesn't is an automatic sensor cleaner. Everytime you turn the camera off, it automatically vibrates the sensor to remove any dust particles that may have acumulated. This is really helpful if you change your lenses a lot, because everytime you change your lenses, the sensor is susceptible to dust and regular cleaning can get costly (every six months is recommended). With the auto cleaning sensor, I don't have to worry about taking it in for cleaning for at least a year. Also, the LCD is MUCh bigger than with the XT. For me, the larger LCD, the higher MP, and the auto sensor cleaner were worth the $200 price increase. Good luck and happy shopping!
I just bought a Rebel XTi before we went on vacation and I absolutely love it. My husband and I played with both XT and XTi in our camera store and what ultimately sold me was the larger LCD and I just wanted the latest model. The automatic sensor cleaner is a nice feature, but it isn't like you can't clean it yourself. Nikon has a really nice camera, too if you are mostly shooting portrait shots. They have a children and pets mode that Canon doesn't have. We went with Canon because we already had lenses from our other Canon SLR camera, and we tend to do more sports photography at this stage of our lives. As a long time Canon user, I think you will be very happy with any Canon Rebel!
I have the older model with 8 megapixels. I love my camera!!! It takes really great pictures.
I think I'm not really good enough to tell the difference but a LA fashion photographer at one of my daughter's photo shoots told me that unless you're blowing it up to a billboard, 8MP is way more than you'll ever need.
Thought I'd share that if it helps you with your decision.
Hugs,
Gina K.

Oh, BTW, two of the three photographers at my daughter's shoots both had Canons. Not rebel XTs but Canons. One was in New York, one from LA. Both did huge ad work for magazines and swore by Canon.
HTH!

I have the XTi and love it. But I also know that my Dad has the older version and loves his, it was what inspired me to get mine. I love how many pictures you can take in a row, compared to my old digital which was so slow. I think you couldn't do wrong with either. I think what sold my husband to buy this one for me was the bigger screen on the back.
I have an XTi and love it. I thought about getting the XT because of cost... but dh said if he was spending that kind of money I might as well get the XTi... gotta love him! ;)
Here is a really great article about megapixels. It's called The Megapixel Myth. This guy, Ken Rockwell, has a ton of stuff on his site about cameras and photography. Love his site. He's why I bought the Nikon D40, 6 MP rather than the 10 MP.
