Best white cardstock for card making / stamping

I love SU! white card stock for stamping as I get really good stamped images, but because it's so thin it doesn't make a good card base.

Can you please let me know, and maybe give me a link to finding another brand of white cardstock that is smooth for stamping on and also thick enough to make a sturdier card base? In doing a Google search several weeks ago I found someone that highly recommended Papertrey Ink white cardstock - which I quickly purchased several packages of, but am very disappointed in the poor stamped images I get as it's not smooth like SU! It's very heavy and makes great card bases, but I need to find a brand that works for both needs.

Here's the link to the current thread about Recollections cardstock from Michaels. They start out talking about the kind that is called "Shimmer" but there is also some discussion about the Recollections 110# cardstock that makes lovely card bases.

My Michaels sells it for $12.99 for 100 sheets, but with a coupon you can get it for about $7!

Another poster mentioned already but it's worth repeating; SU now has a heavier white card stock. I have not had a chance to work with it but I am hoping it will be just as smooth as their other white.
Also, GinaKDesigns sells a nice, heavy weight white. I've only used it for a base and have not stamped directly on it to compare the results with SU. Maybe tomorrow I will do a test and let you know how it turns out.

Hobby Lobby has a heavier cardstock that I use for my card bases now. I think its regular price is $9.99 a ream but I stock up when its 50% off. I love it! Make sure you look for the heavyweight one. It comes in all colors.

Thank you so much for all of your very helpful replies! I'm super excited to know that SU! has a heavier, smooth white cardstock since that will be perfect for stamping solid images and using as a card base.

Is the Recollections and Hobby Lobby cardstock mentioned also smooth for stamping good solid images? I have PTI white cardstock that is perfect for card bases but terrible when stamping solid images on it (compared to SU! c.s.).

That's because PTI white card stock is not coated. Whisper White and Very Vanilla both have a smooth coating that makes them render really great detail and the ink spreads when you stamp rather than sinking right in.

I don't know about SU's heavyweight white. Never have used it. Have you found it also excels with solid images or is it just the WW and VV?

That's why, even though I buy almost all my card stock from Papertrey Ink, I always have Whisper White and Very Vanilla on hand. I never use them for card bases, obviously, but they are terrific for stamping on. The Neenah Solar White is similar, and I have some of that as well.

i used to get that too...good for layers but too thin for me for a base. The Recollections is much thicker but the white isnt super white like Neenah.

I have been through so many papers on the "search"...each time thinking I got a heavier stock till I find out about the next one.

Always use Neenah Solar White in 80# or 110# depending on task. They make color matching a non-issue and yield great results both stamping and die-cutting. You can sample their creams/naturals from their website as that color decision I find highly personal.

The heavy SU white cardstock is absolutely wonderful!! It is exactly like the basic whisper white, but heavy like the colored cardstock. If you decide to purchase it, you will love it!!!!!!

Like Scrapjanny, I've been using the 110# weight cardstock from Staples. Good stamping impressions, sturdy feel...excellent card base.

I love the idea of being able to sample a piece of cardstock before committing to purchasing a whole package, so will need to check into that. I do love my SU! white cardstock for stamping, so I'll definitely be looking into purchasing the new, heavier one.

Since I was in the area I stopped and picked up a package each of the HEAVYWEIGHT i ivory, white and black. I cut an entire package of the white for bases. This cardstock is great! It is 50% off this week too.Im going to pick up a few more packages before the sale ends on Satuday evening. Oh, I noticed that the heavyweight comes in assorted colors like pastels too! Hi Sprtchick. Thanks for the info on the pkg of heavyweight cardstock available at HL. I LOVE recollections 110# paper. The quality, price and (for me) availability. Great for copicing, card bases anything. I Don't like Gina K 120#. Cannot get a nice fold (gets cracky) and doesn't lay flat. I absolutely hate SU paper. Flimsy. The new heavier is only a tiny bit better. I don't think you can beat Recollections 110# paper. Like Mikey says "Try it, you'll like it." Or LOVE it.

Hi, I was going to post this question myself. A few years ago I purchased SU Whisper white and like it. I am about out so I looked around and yesterday purchased a pack of white card stock marked Heavy or Thick from Hobby Lobby. I haven't opened it yet but last time I purchased one from either there or Michaels it wasn't thick enough. I am afraid to open it in case I don't like it. I will be waiting for someone to give me heads up on this or what to look for. Thanks

You need to look for the weight before you open the package. If you see #110, it is thick and sturdy enough for card bases.

I went onto the SU! website and only see one option for Whisper White cardstock. Do they only have the heavier one now or should I be seeing 2 Whisper White cardstock options?

I looked on my demo's website and found it. Item # is 140272 and it is called Whisper White 8-1/2x11 Thick Cardstock. The description says it is 100# cover weight. $7.00 for 24 sheets.

With the Recollections or the Hobby Lobby heavy cardstock for bases. I cut an entire package of the HL white and folded it for bases. I was very happy with the fact that without even scoring it the HL folded beautifully with no cracking on the fold. I love the HL brand and at 50% off the package of 50 will make 100 bases for 4.50! Not too bad for good quality.

I got 10 more packages of the HL white heavy today while it is still 50% off. I neglected to mention that when I folded my bases I was pleasantly surprised that it did NOT crack on the fold if I didnt score!
I have enough for awile now.......

Anyhoo, I just wanted to let you know about Gina K heavy, re the cracking. They told me to just score it numerous times and you will not get the cracking. I have found this to be the case and am very happy with Gina's heavy c.s.

Neenah has lots of different card products and all are not the same. (This is true for lots of paper companies products) How white they, the weight of the card, the smoothness of the card, the way the card absorbs ink/paint/etc varies. Doesn't mean that product isn't what you want, just to be aware of more than the brand name. Many bloggers talk about Neenah classic crest which has several weights and is super smooth (according to the websites). When I've searched for it I've found that particular product is pricey compared to what might be found (even Neenah brand) at Target, Sams, Walmart, OfficeMax, etc.

No such luck at Staples with Neenah I also live in Canada and went right over after seeing the ad. It is only coloured paper they carry and low pound weight. In fact the clerk looked up the product on their website and it appears they do not carry the one we speak of here. They carry the same type of of Neenah at Walmart in Canada.

I love SU but I thought I'd check out HL heavy weight after reading about it a while back. I wasn't sure if it seemed heavy enough. I will go back and look for 110 #.

Also, has anyone bought regular whisper white lately? Someone had mentioned that maybe they have changed it. That it's not as nice of quality. I love Whisper White and hope it hasn't changed.

I have used this from Walmart never had a problem. It has 150 sheets of 110 cardstock. Acid free I have used it on cards, layouts and paper crafting. and i love the price $5.48! Leaves me more money to spend on other goodies.

I was so disappointed. I loved the Michael's Recollections white cardstock. It was so thick and easy to stamp on. . . I bought some recently and it has changed. It is now thinner AND it has a grayish cast. It is not the pure white it used to be. Has anyone else noticed this? I contacted Michael's and they said sometimes their vendors change the products. Wish I had bought more when I could!!

There's a whole thread on this subject somewhere within these posts. The consensus is that since Michael's changed from US manufacture of the 110# CS and farmed it out to China, it's not worth buying.
