IMHO you get what you pay for. I've gone through 2 of the Marvy brand like yours; the first burned up (including my project) and the 2nd just quit working. I finally got the heat tool from Stampin'Up and it works great. I also like the plactic protector at the (hot) tip - even tho mine has already warped a little!

Even so, all heat guns are not created equal. I was perfectly happy with my old Marvy heat gun from Michael's... until I became a demo and started doing monthly swaps for my upline's training meetings that required me to make two dozen of the same card. It was fine for the first few repetitions, but the quality of the embossing went down noticeably as I approached the halfway point. I vowed never again to do heat embossing on a swap till I got the SU! heat gun, which has always performed fabulously even when doing a ton of embossing all at once.

$29.95, and worth every penny IMO. You might be able to get another Marvy one for half that with a coupon at some big box craft store, but having owned one I'd say it's also only half as good in terms of quality. The SU! one blows hotter air, and heats more evenly.

Just to agree that you shouldn't expect distress EP to act the same as regular stuff. It's much harder to tell when it's done.
I always look at these threads on heat guns. I've been using a regular DIY Black & Decker one for about ten years. I feel it's a lot hotter than craft models, but I've only ever scorched something once and I've yet to read enough to persuade me I need a new special craft model.
All heat guns are not created equal. I have a little blue one I got at Joann's a year or two ago- Darice is the name I think? Anyway, it's not very good. The marvey one is better than the one I have, I don't think I've ever use the SU! one though.
I picked up a "real" heat gun from the hardware store. I love it. It has two temp settings and it was half the price of the cheapie at Michaels. I know its not going to burn out or the housing warp like the craft heat guns since it was made for a harder workout than the craft heat guns will get.
oh i agree that the heat guns arent equal. one day i will get a SU one, but
wanted to let the OP know that you cant expect the same results with the tim holtz powder. its a different product.
