I don't know what spliting is but when I crumble my paper I just spray a little bit of water on it first. When I flatten it back out I just use the heat tool to dry it. I do it first and by the time I am done stamping the paper is dry and ready to be added to the card.
Is that what kind of crumble you mean?
My demo showed us this technique at a workshop. You take your bone fine and pull it across the paper until you start to break the paper fibers. Then you can crumble it if you still need to.
After I had some time to thing about the directions, I realized that I should have mentioned that you use the side of the bone fine and that you start in the middle of your paper and scrape outwards.
You can also actually take the paper and very carefully at the edge pull it apart in layers. This works better if you have some fingernails. It can sometimes be difficult to get started, but is a little easier if you have run the piece of paper through your crimper several times and in different directions, then split it and it gives you a really nice raw looking piece.
