Question Real basic question about sponging -don't laugh

Hi there,
I am very new to stamping and have a question about sponging. I just bought some sponges from SU and tried to use them today. Didn't turn out very well. Please don't laugh!!

In the brochure, I saw a sponge that looked to be cut in 4ths. Do we cut the sponges? Are we supposed to wash them first? Any tips on how to get sponging to look cute on the edges of a card? I tried and it looked really faint and thick. Not cute on the edges like I see here in the galleries.

Thanks for any responses!

No question is a bad question.
You can cut your sponge in smaller pieces to accommodate more colors.... No need to wash.
I would play around to get the desired effect. How are you getting the ink to your sponge? I usually just take the ink pad and run it across the edges....

Michelle I'm not sure what effect you are trying to get but I rub my sponge on my ink pad and then I take my sponge and rub in down over the edge of my card stack holding the card in my hand. If you rub the sponge you get a totally different effect. Not sure this makes any sense but I tried
