I saw this in one of the crafting magazines last summer! Super cute, but do you think I can find the issue it was in?? I can't believe I didn't save it out!
I even bought 100 old 45's on eBay to do this, and have no clue how it's done :(
Nancy, the 45 Record Album is easy as pie! The lady that demoed that clip was very nervous.. every other word was *actually*. Bless her heart. (I woulda done way worse.) Fiskars should have experienced demoers for this. Other than drilling thru plastic, you would make this album exactly as any other album.
Old CD's would work equally as well, only smaller and you'd already have the silver edge!
Here's my take on the video. I would drill the holes 1st, before I glued anything. No wasted supplies if they crack or break!
1. Paint 5 records with watered down acrylic paint, let dry. (I think the paint will chip ez since its on plastic.) Perhaps a paint pen may work better, maybe a metallic paint pen.
2. Cut a scrap of cs the size of the center hole. I'll have to re-watch, cause I didn't catch what this was used for. I would use it to cover the center hole to stablize the base paper that will be glued on top of the record. If so, it would have to be cut out a bit larger than the hole.
3. Using the record as a template, draw around it onto patterned, textured paper. Cut out and glue it to the painted record. Miraculously, her paper circle was a tad smaller than the record. She didn't explain. I assume that when she cut out the circle, she cut inside the line about 1/16"-1/8" or so all the way around.
4. Lavish on photos, stamp images, journaling, die cuts, ribbon, embellies, etc. to create the finished album.
5. Using the Fiskars Hand Drill, drill 3 holes side by side, a bit from the edge on each record. I figure 1/4", and about 1/4" space between each hole. These measurements depend on what you use for a 'hinge'. She used wire that is used with a binding machine which would dictate specific spaced holes. You can be loose and use ribbon, cording, hinged key rings, etc.

Thanks for the link. That poor woman demoing was way too nervous. They really should practice or something I thought my ears were going to fall off listening to the long drawn out everything she was saying. I think it is a good idea. I think you should use records that don't have god song on them though. I still love the old 45's. not that I still have something to play them on.
Thanks Stormy: What great directions! If it looks interesting I usually take notes to remind myself of the directions.
Another good site that has a weekly video is www.crafttvweekly.com - you can download the video if you like. They have a different craft expert each week & you can check their archive also.
Thanks for your help!
Nancy
I found a post by La Peggy a few weeks back that also used old 45's. I'd attach a link, but somehow I'm not able to; if you get a chance to find it, however could any of you tell me ideas on how it was bound? (I emailed directly, but still anticipating an answer.) Do you think it was put together like a flip/accordion book? I'm wondering how loose the ribbon is; what do you think? TIA
LOL I am wondering how many people 30 and under are reading this and saying "what the heck is a 45"
30 here... I had albums growing up! I remember getting my first record player and my very first record was the pacman soundtrack. hehe. It wasn't a 45 though. I did have some 45's like I think I had a Paula Abdul one and many others. I still have them too but I collect them so I wouldn't want to use it as an album. Hearing some buying a bunch to use for this made me kinda cringe. *lol*
last weekend my dh and i went to an antique store and i bought some 45s just to make this. my hubby was laughing when we were leaving because the old guy that worked there wrapped all the records in paper to protech them. when we left my dh said you should be ashamed of your self that poor guy took time to protech those records and your going to go home and punch holes in them. i thought it was hilarious.
To bind just drill the holes and tie together with ribbon or you can get those metal rings that snap open/close in an office supply store. Both work great.

Does anybody have a program similar to one that makes CD labels, that would make fake record labels for 33 and 45 records? Can I use a CD label graphic art program? I want to make a fake Elvis label for a 33 vinyl record so I can make an album out of it. I bought some Elvis paper at the scrapbook store. (Cutting into a REAL Elvis vinyl record is a SIN.) LOL!

I have to agree with this! It would be a sin. Big Elvis fan here.

Hey! I'm 25 and I know what a 45 is! *hehe* only because my mom showed me her "collection" about 5 years ago.. Before that I had NO IDEA what a 45 was. I also liked the carrying case that came with them..
Looks to me like she cut the album edge off in a strait line then attached it to black cardstock so it could open and close it like a flap. (If you look closely at the pic I think you can see what I mean. Then she bound it with the ribbon. Make sense?

Drilling holes: I like to snatch DH's Dremel when he's not looking.
labels: I recently used my printshop program to make a fake record label. I started with a blank circle then added another and shaded in the area between the 2 in dark grey to make it look like a record. Then I shaded color in the center and typed in the "songs"
