Default Need "how to" for triangle in a circle

I found the neatest ornament on the Martha Stewart site recycling Christmas cards. I don't know how to link or I would. The ornament uses 20 circles. Five connected circles make the top and bottom and 10 connected circles make the middle piece, then the three are joined and form a "ball".

The directions call for making a template, an equilateral triangle inside a circle. The points should touch the side of the circle.

Think these would also be fun to stamp using Christmas images, stickers, etc. but can't figure out how to make the template and get an even triangle.

Arrow link

Here's the link to the instructions for this ornament on marthastewart.com:

As for the template, well, it depends on the size of the circle you use. The article suggests using a cup to trace your circles. That is, each person makes their own template.

To get an equilateral triangle, just eyeball it. There is a mathematical formula for figuring this out, but it's too much work (unless you're a Math major). "Eyeballing" will be good enough, I think. You'll end up with something like this:

I hope this helps! Looks like a really cool idea! I can see myself making my own patterned paperr with snowflake stamps and making these ornaments.

Thanks Jeannine for the info on how to link and Avonlea for posting the link and the template.

I was afraid math would be involved and I'm not a math major. I am good at eyeballing however.

These are easy to make. I learned how to make them in the 3rd grade.
It can be done with as few as 6 circles. 3 for the top and 3 for the bottom then join them together.

This is good to know, thanks. Will be a lot quicker tracing that template onto 6 circles rather than 20. I did make one using some of my scrap c/s and am pleased with it.

A group of us made these last week using 8 circles. It was so fun to choose colors and see how they worked together and the ornaments are so pretty!

I found it much faster to just fold the flaps over the template instead of tracing and then folding.

I used a circle punch and we embossed silver snowflakes in the center of the circles. The punch was a lot easier than tracing 20 circles.
