Default Making Ink Splatters?

I know there are many talented ladies out there that can fling ink/paint on their images and make it look good!! Any tips? Do I lay the paper flat or hold it up in the air? What type of brush do I use?? Do I use reinkers? I want a fine splattering and not just blobs!! Thanks!

I don't know how you feel about purchasing another tool, but if you have markers with the brush-type ends...you can use the SU color spritzer tool with them. They give a real nice splatter effect.

Chris what type of affect are you looking for?

I have always used the Paint brush and flinging method.

I've used those blow pens they sell for kids (at least they used to sell them). The colors are rather limited, but you can make a fine or a denser mist by getting closer or further away. I also have a big background stamp that is random dots (not Stampin' Up, and I'm not near my stamp room right now to check the manufacturer).

I water the ink down a bit to make it thinner, dip my small paint brush in, and tap it against my pointer finger over my card--very fine splatters!! I heard that running your finger across a toothbrush works too.

I'll try to explain how I made the splatters on this card:

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

I squished a Brilliance ink pad into the protecter lid (that come with Brilliance pads) and picked up ink in an aquapainter. (Would work with drops of reinkers too)
Then I held it over the paper and flicked at the aquapainter, sometimes I just tapped it. I think tapping will make bigger splotches than flicking! Hope this helps!

I've always used a firm old toothbrush as well. To avoid a mess, I lay things down in a box and splatter to prevent splatter on the table. :o) I've thought about the SU spritzer, but I'm used to the toothbrush.

Default try a spray bottle

you can also use a small spray bottle. If you use a certain color a lot (like brown for antiquing) then it's very handy. You just do little fine squirts onto the paper. You can put a few drops of brown or whatever color reinker into the the bottle with a little bit of water, and voila, you have your spray bottle.

Wow! How exciting to find my question as part of this week's Inkling! I finally tried it!! Here are my observations:

1. The box is a great idea...I had splatters everywhere! Including my face and glasses!

2. I tapped the aquabrush while it was upright...but you really need it to lay over the image - horizantally. And then you tap downwards... I also had to dilute my reinker ink with a little extra water.

3. Do not pick up your masterpiece right away! I was so excited and ready to examine my ink splots but, because, they were watered down...they smeared and ran abit. sigh...

Thanks for all the helpful ideas posted. I will continue to work on this!

I've used a slurpee straw - the kind with a little shovel kind of looking end. I carefully picked up some watered down ink and then blew into the other end really hard. Ink everywhere, but it did make some really neat splatter marks on my paper. I would recommend doing this outside or cover your area with plastic or newspaper.
