I shoot my photos in RAW and import them to a computer via Lightroom and when I export them and turn them into an JPEG and downsize them I have the option to add an watermark so I just use my name and it does it automatically, and if I want to print something or need it larger I just uncheck the box to not get a watermark.
It would help if you mentioned what kind of softwear you have. before lightroom I used adobe photoshop elements to do the same thing.
I used a program called "Visual Watermark". There's a thread around here which is how I found out about the program. It only costs around $20 and it's super easy to use. You just drag the photo to the program, click on "add watermark" and save the watermarked pic to a folder of your choice and that's that. So easy. You can do several at the same time, too.
I use Picasa, the free photo editing program from Google. Watermarking is easy but it does seem to limit adding any 'flourishy' things. I have recently been using 'picnik' which is linked to Picasa to add fun images to the watermark but that site is closing in April.
I bought a whimsy watermark from whimsy stamps and it was very easy to add to my pictures, they give full instructions within the email and it cost just 2.

I've created a watermark in powerpoint before. If you just want text, you can put the words in a text box make the font a gray. Then right click and save that as a picture.
If you already have one, or to insert the one you just made, insert your picture in powerpoint, insert your watermark and place it on top of your picture. Then select them both and group them. Then you can right click and save the layered image as a picture.
