Default HELP! Reinker glitter ornaments

I'm hoping someone here will be able to tell me why my reinker glitter ornaments aren't spectacular. I saw the technique on SCS and had to try it. I've now gone through a whole box of ornaments and not gotten one that looks as good as the ones I've seen here (luckily a little water swished around in there wipes the slate clean so as soon as they dry I can try again!

I've tried two things:

1) I put a drop of water in the ornament then 15 or 20 drops of reinker, swished it around, tipped dit upside down to drain for 5 minutes and added glitter.

2) I skipped the water and put in 25 drops of reinker, let it drain for 5 minutes then added the glitter. This seemed to work better than the water mixture, but I still keep getting uneven color and I get a sort of line around the middle of the ornament that looks funny.

What am I doing wrong? I was hoping to make these for a craft show and I have a car full or clear glass ornaments in 2 sizes . . . . Can anyone help?

Plus, my sister-in-law just called and said she was coming over and she'd be here in an hour . . . so now instead of playing with Christmas ornaments while my daughter naps I have to clean the house!

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

For me it just took a lot of patience. For the lighter colors, like soft sky and river rock I didnt put all the drops in at once... I dropped 5, spread that around, on a clear spot dropped 5 more, twirled that around, and kept doing that until the ball was full of color, that way it didnt get too much ink in it. And remember to definately let it sit upside down for a while first, if that ink doesnt come out, then when you flip it right side up again, its just all going to come right back through the bulb, causing uneven spots. With one of them there was still a big puddle of ink at the bottom while flipped upside down so I actually stuck a paper towel in there to get it out before flipping it right side up again.
AND if there is a little bit of uneven color, thats OKAY. Art isnt perfect... they will still look awesome!

mine are in my gallery if youd like to see the incolors in them...

hope all this helped..

Default Thanks!

Thanks for all your help and encouragement! You were right, I wasn't letting them sit long enough . . . and I think the color actually makes a difference, too. I haven't had much luck with the lighter colors, but I have made some beautiful ornaments. I think I'm finally getting the hang of it.

Have you ever tried using Rangers Alcohol inks on the glass ornaments instead of SU re inkiers? Hmmmmm might have to try it myself.

I'm very new to crafting and am just starting to get into it (so much fun!) I would love to try these glitter ornaments. The pictures in the gallery are beautiful! I went to Michael's last night and was able to find the clear ornaments but didn't find anything called Reinker (which I assumed was ink). Any ideas where I can find this Reinker stuff? Thanks for your help!

You will find small bottles of ink near the ink pads at most Michaels, Hobby Lobby & Joann stores - usually "Ranger" inks and in sets of 2-3 bottles. Or, if you have access to a Stampin Up dealer, you can order them in over 48 beautiful colors that match their cardstock (no, I am not a dealer, just another "addict").
I want to try these ornaments, but am afraid of "wasting" a lot of ink and/or glitter - my supplies are rather limited right now.

Has anyone tried these with Ranger inks?

Default Reinkers

I've never tried them with alcohol inks, but I'm not sure how that would work, the alcohol will cause the ink to dry so fast I'm not sure how the glitter will stick.

I am lucky enough to be an SU demonstrator, so I have access to tons of reinkers. I did, however, use Martha Sewart glitter from Michael's rather than use up my SU glitter. You get a goodsize bottle for only $5, and it is super fine, so it coats pretty evenly. I've used the same bottle to make at least 12 ornaments, and it isn't even half empty.

As for the reinkers, these ornamets don't really use up a ton of ink, either.

OK - so here comes a real dumb question
How do you drain the ornaments & for how long - do you just sit them on the little necks on paper towels & hope they stay that way, or do you put them into egg cartons, or do you put one in each hand and dance around the kitchen/house leaving little dribbles everywhere you go?
I may want to do 60 of them & if that is the way to drain them, I will be hospitalized - or committed ;) .

I tip them upside down in cups and leave them there for 10 minutes. Then you can be filling others with ink or glitter while some dry. SUper easy, and way less messy!

OK, so if I have this right according to this forum, this is how to do them?

1. Put approx 25 drops ink into the ball, swirl it around a little, then let it sit in a paper cup to drain for 10 min.
2. Then add glitter, swirl again (the ball that is) and drain for a few more minutes. Martha Stewart glitter works well & is cheaper than SU glitter - especially when you use a coupon.
3. Then put ribbon/cord/whatever to hang them up.

So, no dancing is required - I'm so relieved .

I don't remember seeing any re-inkers in stores (except for the Ranger inks which apparently are alcohol based). So, other than SU, how/where do you find reinkers?

Mine aren't up yet, but you can go into gallery, then do a search for reinker ornaments or glitter ornaments and some should pop up. If you don't see any, let me know and I'll take a picture of mine and put it up.
