It's the last Tuesday of the month so that means it's time for our Teapot Tuesday Tickle Challenge
This week's challenge is brought to you by guest hostess: jkanack, Jean
CHALLENGE:Today we are going to honor a Milwaukee artist named Mary Nohl. Mary was born into an affluent family in Foxpoint, Milwaukee, WI on September 6, 1914 and died on December 22, 2001. While her parents were typical, conservative, affluent people, she was encouraged by them to pursue her love of art. She showed creativity from an early age, building small structures with discarded materials that others thought were junk. In 8th grade, her father arranged for her to enroll in the boy's industrial arts class and she won a finalist place in an airplane building contest, the only girl to do so.
Mary eventually taught art and had her own pottery shop. Because of her family's affluence, she never had to work and could create to her heart's content. Her parents bought a home on the shore of Lake Michigan and this was her home to the end of her life. She would scavenge on the beach for driftwood, junk that washed up; she collected anything and everything, from cigar bands to bricks. She saw artistic uses for all materials. Eventually she started hauling large logs from the beach and carved them into the craziest, wildest creatures she could dream up; those became her 'garden art' around her home. She worked in cement, stones and all manner of materials. She traveled a lot and was especially influenced by Easter Island. She gained an eccentric reputation, even though she was very social and had many friends, and was given
the nickname 'witch of Foxpoint', because of her strange but fascinating collection of sculptures outside her home. She didn't seem to mind it, even laughed about it, although a certain amount of vandalism started to happen, causing her to erect a chain link fence. After she died, there was much discussion about her home and property; her home is now on the National Historic Register, protected and renovated by the Kohler Foundation. Fortunately, Mary had a lot of friends who cared about her art. Mary was an artist ahead of her time, a recycler, a single woman of immense imagination."I like the days best when I have a lot of projects-each so much fun that I don't know which to do first."
My challenge to you is to use Mary's art, environment and imagination to create something unique, including something recycled. I hope you're inspired by her creatures, her colors, her environment, her whimsy.
You should be able to find plenty of inspiration onthis Pinterest Boardor you can do your own research!Share what inspired you with us - and tell us what you recycled.
EPEC(extra points for extra cookies): Make sure to use something recycled on your card!

I am also adding some extra pictures Jean sent me.
Thank you Jean to let me discover this great artist, thank you for the challenge, and Sabrina thank you for adding the extra pictures Jean wanted to share with us.
I had fun making my tickle inspired by one of her beautiful paintings
I'm sorry my photos were blurry and not very good at all. I retook them and edited. I hope they appear soon. I love the quote on the inside left and I wanted all to be able to read it.

Thanks Jean for introducing us to Mary Nohl....Her whole house was surrounded by her wonderful art. I was inspired by the blue door and the collection of chairs in her house.

What an interesting woman Mary must have been. I spend some time reading up on her over the weekend. The story that stood out to me concerned how people reacted to her art. She used to work in wood, but people vandalized her statues, so she starting using concrete. Her biggest piece was a 12-foot dinosaur, and the story is she had a large wooden statue in her yard, and some local kids came in and set it on fire. She called the fire department, but by the time they got to her house there really wasn't anything they could do. She said she and her dogs sat and watched it burn, and eventually, all that was left were two large metal posts that had held the statue in place. She created the dinosaur out of concrete, including covering up the metal posts and turning them into legs for the dinosaur. ... I'll try to attach a photo of her dino.
Here's my card -- featuring a dragon instead of a dinosaur
I loved this challenge Jean! Mary Nohls was quite the lady! I remember reading about her years ago. We lived in Milwaukee for a few years. I took one of the photos I found of her and sketched one of her statutes and watercolored it. Here's my card:
This was such a great challenge, Jean. And thanks to you, too, Sabrina. Loved being introduced to Mary Nohl., and I think you both knew I'd be all over this as I always try to recycle oddities. These were close by. MMTPT653 For Art's Sake by ArtzadoniStudio at Splitcoaststampers by Lori "Artzadoni"
I want to thank everyone for embracing Mary in the way you did. I wasn't so sure how this would go over, pretty weird (not unusual for me), I think in many ways, Mary was a pretty normal woman who had more ideas than she could cope with. All of your projects are very thoughtful and well done. I know she would have liked to have been married and she actually spoke about adopting a child (she ended up buying another dog). I have a rather awful story to share. Years ago, when my daughter was in high school, a friend of hers invited her to go to 'the witch's house.' They were old enough, could drive, I had no idea what that meant as I did not know who Mary was. I believe they did go, although by that time, the fence was up and I doubt they climbed it. When I put two and two together recently, I told Liz about Mary and she was absolutely horrified that they went there. She didn't share anything and I didn't ask. And Mary was probably in her decline of health by then as this would have been late 90's. I'm so embarrassed, as is Liz.

I think everyone's card is a GREAT inspiration! I am battling a migraine right now and have had it for almost 2 weeks. I can't afford the medication my doctor has prescribed for it. So forgive me for not going to each person's card and commenting on them. God bless!! Jan

I'm so sorry, Jan. That is an absolute crime that the medication is unaffordable. I hope you get some relief soon. Jean

I used an image from this collection for my inspiration: HERE The one that is red/white/blue and looks like Alcohol Inks..... I used a background using alcohol inks applied to felt on a protractor (or a ruler) and making designs with them on your BG.... Thanks Jennifer McGuire : )
Here is my panel. It's still drying as I started this on Sunday and finally today I have finished it. I hope my recipient likes weird LOL. I had fun creating this.
I took inspiration from the tall statues in her garden as well as the colours in her home.
Happy day everyone.

I am playing Challenge cardmaking, and hopefully, doing some catching up on some as well.
Challenge: be inspired by Mary Nohl's art; use something recycled. One of Mary Nohl's sculpture mediums was wood. My recycles: Kraft paper bag inside and out; copper leaves from scrap stash (made smaller leaves from larger leaves).
This card is for my oldest son's half-century birthday...yes the BIG 50! Here is my card: It's the BIG 50!
