CHALLENGE:
The synthetic material called nylon was invented in 1935 and was introduced to the world in 1939 at the New York World's Fair. Commercial production of the fabric began in the later months of 1939 and nylon stockings were sold to the general public beginning in 1940. They were instantly popular, with millions of units sold right away. As the United States entered the second World War in late 1941, DuPont would have to devote their resources to the production of war materials. This meant that nylons would not be found for sale during the war years. DuPont used the nylon material to help make parachutes, tents, and ropes during the war and nylon stockings became a scarce commodity. They were highly sought after by women and could be found being sold and traded on the black market.

Our guest of honor, Annie was born in 1940 just as nylon stockings came onto the scene. My challenge is to highlight her fondness for fashion by including something representative of nylon on your card...it could be a parachute, hot air balloon, a banner, rope, maybe some type of nylon ribbon or fibers.

We're having birthday tea! Our own Anita (sniejte) requested a teaparty for her mom, Annie, who will celebrate her 80th birthday on July 19. Anita lives in France and was supposed to go to the Netherlands to celebrate with her mom but COVID19 had other plans. Anita asked if the teapotters would throw some extra love Annie's way in the form of birthday cards. In addition to her love of fashion, Annie also loves her garden, plants and flowers. Just a note...Annie has poor eyesight so she has trouble reading small fonts.

I mailed it to Annie on Thursday, but had local ISP issues (sigh) so am uploading it today...internet is still a bit wonky, but I think I finally got a "window" here!

Karen, that's a beautiful card.

I made mine and mailed it a week ago, just before we left for a mini break away from home. I saved the write-up but totally forgot to email myself the photo of the card, so I couldn't upload it till we got home again yesterday. Three loads of washing and a big supermarket shop, back home indeed.

Sabrina your card arrived, I spoke my mother this morning and she told me she has got a card from Ireland and one from the States, she wasn't able to tell from who it was but my brother or sister will tell me later, she said that are beautiful cards and now she knows other cards will arrive she will keep an eye on the letterbox every day!!

cards my Mother has got, 2 from Canada and one from Ireland the others from the States, she knows now more cards are coming and she knows about the nylon, she will show more pictures later when there are more cards, but she's so happy and proud to show them!! Thank you all for bringing a smile on my mother's face!!

I think I can see a part of my card in the pic. And if so, that got there really fast. I had mailed it on the 15th! I had put it in a bubble wrap envelope and paid more postage because of that. So maybe that was why she got it faster?

Is that a collection of thimbles in the glass case? I used to collect those too, but all my little shelves are full so I don't buy any more. I'm sure it must be fun for your mother receiving the cards, and now she will be trying to work out what is nylon on them!

Shirl, yes your card arrived!! and yes Sabrina my mother collects them for ages...this is only a small amount...every time we go in a place we weren't before we buy here one and she's got 4 children and grandchildren so you can imagine how many she's got...

Late to the tea party, but here is my card. It's the one on the right. I used Polyester ribbon which is nylon's stronger cousin. Both have the same properties (yes I looked it up! TG Google!) such as easy care, wrinkle resistance, stretch resistance and shrink resistance.Nylon is just softer

I am playing my "Challenge Catch-up" cardmaking and catching up on a few Easter cards that I forgot to post! This Easter card was for my youngest son and his family, which includes my oldest granddaughter, who is five.

I chose a nylon fiber ribbon of organza. I am very late to the party, so I made an Easter celebration card to give my son and family for Easter.
