I checked those in the nearby preserve and found instructions like you said. Goose Woods Trail. Marker #6 just over bridge....etc. I'm going to try it out soon. Maybe tomorrow. I have a small bee stamp I may use. I was looking for the small button stamp I had. As a crafter I thought a button might be perfect. What do you do in their log? Stamp it, sign it? I'm going to use the same username I have in geocaching. It will make it easier to remember.

Morning everyone!

We try not to get too political on this chat thread but expressing your angry with what happened is not political in my thinking. It is so sad all of those lives lost and families heart broken. And now hearing that the stories coming out afterwards, it breaks my heart again, for that little girl that played dead to survive and what she has to deal with in the coming days, months, and years.

Hugs to all of you to be safe and happy! Enjoy your day!

Ditto what Ann said!
Oh, Kathy, so fun that you are going letterboxing, too. Did you sign up on the site, so you can log your finds there, too? Don’t forget to take a notebook with you , so you can stamp their stamp in your book and write name and place, and date you found it. In their book, I stamp my stamp, sign my user name, date it.

Im signed up on Atlasquest as ddcoffee. I'm using a coffee mug stamp for now, but I have to carry an ink spot, so I may try to find something else that is self inking. Did a short hike at the lake and found my first set of three letterboxes. I recorded my find, stamped their log (but forgot to date it) stamped their stamps on my recipe card with date, planter, and date planted.Im using recipe cards (the blank side) so I can punch a hole in the corner and used a binder ring to hold them. I could also put them in an album. I find this much easier than geocaching because I don't have to rely on a gps or my reading of the gps coordinates!! LOL

Forgot to say that I also logged it on the site. My first card is kind of messy but here it is.

This is too good not to share. I think we probably all need the reminder.

Melody-that is so true. Why do we find it so hard to cut into a beautiful piece of paper? Saving it for some "better" project? Thanks for sharing that wisdom.

Morning!

I have some paper I have saved thinking I need it for the perfect card! But for the most part I now just cut into everything I have since some is getting very old and starting to show the age.

What lovely cards are showing up for the first challenge of this round!! I think all of us love our alcohol inks!!

Hugs to all, have a wonderful day and great holiday weekend!

After messing with AI onVellum I found that ranger ones can be blown but the Inkadink ones I have just stayed in a ball and didn’t spread without using a sponge although they work perfect well on other card and photo paper.

I left my first piece drying but not sure what I will do with it ! I have a massive pile of BG pieces but not one made with alcohol inks would you believe haha

Good morning! We are enjoying a cool Memorial weekend, it even rained last night which was a wonderful surprise. DD1 enjoyed showing her new-to-her car off to her friends yesterday. They got together and played games last night.

I worked on my DTGD challenge yesterday and had fun playing.

Shelly, way to be productive. Glad you are feeling better too. I hope to get some extra house cleaning chores done. We won't have a family BBQ for Memorial day until Memorial evening due to DD1's work schedule. This is my weekend to think of my uncle that I never met because he paid the ultimate price for our country in WWII.

Jan, yay for being done painting and for getting your passport! And Happy Anniversary!

Kathy and Sharon, I'm going to have to check out letterboxing. We tried geocaching and it was challenging. Letterboxing sounds more user friendly. I'll have to check out that website and see if there are boxes near us. It sounds like fun.

Kathy, I like how you described this thread as our happy place. Yes! Perfect descriptor.

Melody, an excellent reminder! It is my goal to actually use up/get rid of all my designer paper and just create what I need. There are so many fun techniques for making backgrounds. It would save space for me.

Kathy, yay for your first letterboxing find!

And yes, your photo of the gas price sign is definitely the truth in CA. Prices are horrendous. In LA (thank goodness I don't live there), they are paying $7/gallon and they drive everywhere. It is so sprawled out, there isn't a good public transit option.

Well, I should get off here and get to work.

Some guy driving a lifted pick up pulled in the driveway. He had tattoos and long beard. He came over to the porch so I went out. He said "you don't know who I am, do you?" No, I didn't know him at all. It turns out he's the son of my neighbor. I played cards with a group of ladies, one if which was his mom. She died several years ago but his dad still lives down the road. Anyway, it seems that as he was driving down the road someone ran him off the road and he took out my sister and my mailboxes! I never heard a thing. He said he was going to pick up his granddaughter, which makes me feel old because I didn't even know he had grandkids. so he went and got her and then he came back to tell us what happened. D h is fixing it. Luckily the mailboxes weren't really damaged much. It was more the heavy post they were in. I'm glad he came back to tell us because I would have wondered what happened.

Everytime there is a tragedy like this in Texas, they all say the same old thing about guns. It is crazy making how nothing has changed. What is that saying?.....the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

Kathy, was your sister okay?

We are enjoying watching Inventing Anna. Only two more episodes to go. We like Julia Garner from Ozark so that is why we started watching it. Anyone else watchin it?

Hey there, all of you fabulous alphas,

I'm so tired. I feel like all I've done all the month of May is run around. I'm ready to stay home for a bit. Had a good week with the grands, their final program at school was so good. Clare, the 5th grader, was featured quite a bit and I could hear Mirren's voice come through everyone else's. She is very good at projecting. Both girls have excellent singing voices.

I spent a bit of time on Thursday afternoon with two of my 4th grade penpals, who were beyond delightful. All I could think about was those 4th graders in Texas. I just wanted to hold my two penpals, I did give them a little hug. Looking forward to meeting the other two in a week.

My sister, brother and SIL were here for the weekend for the annual service at the WWII monument. It was a lovely service; we honor a soldier who didn't get to come home every year and this year, turned out he was a relative of my neighbor. I'm a little baffled that people don't know what Memorial Day is all about, someone came up to me after the service and asked why his father in law wasn't mentioned...um, he came home and lived to be in his 90's. Gold star families are who we need to focus on this weekend.

So everyone is gone and I'm home alone. I think I'm going to bed, I can't keep my eyes open. Talk to everyone tomorrow.

Shirl, I'm pretty sure that Kathy meant the guy hit her sister's mailbox and her mailbox, not her sister.

Default Hello from a relative newbie!

Hello everyone! I am somewhat of a newbie to Split Coast Challenges. I joined in around Easter and noticed your thread not too long after, except that it was nearing the end. So I decided to wait until you started this new round before joining in.

I don't have any alcohol ink nor anything that might be a good substitute, so I probably will contribute my first card next week, when it's time for brads. I have plenty of those! Just have to figure out how to use them on a card without poking back to the inside of the card.

See you again soon!

Shirl, Melody is right. I sure worded that strangely! It did sound like he took her and my mailbox out! LOL.

Welcome Ellen. Sometimes with brads, I cut the backs off and just stick them on with a glue dot. Then you don't have the bump pushing into you card.

Welcome Ellen. Glad you are joining us. If you don't have alcohol inks, you can fake it. If you have dye inks, or even pigment inks, put some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball, then add a few drops of ink (or even food coloring, if you don't have any refills), and dab it on your card stock, either glossy or regular, for a polished stone background. We are all about using what you have.

Wow so much chat since I was last on. Yes Kathy this is a happy place. Welcome Ellen.

Thinking of everyone in Texas. I just can never get my head around these senseless acts and wish guns were outlawed everywhere apart from where they are absolutely necessary.

Jan, yay to finishing the villa. When we had our painting done the only room that didn’t get done was my craft room. The painters couldn’t get in there or move everything lol. Have a great anniversary together. Congratulations. Good news on your DIL and hope she continues to heal.

Shirl, we watched Inventing Anna. I loved watching her in a different role to Ruth. We’ve just finished watching The Lincoln Lawyer which was good. Now watching the latest season of Blacklist.

I’m also reading The Count of Monte Cristo and loving it. I thought I had read it at school but it doesn’t seem familiar. Highly recommend it. I still haven’t got the craft stash out…no time and no desire.

We had torrential rain here on Sunday and some roads further north and where we are going are closed. Hopefully by the time we get there they will have reopened but what a mess it had left here. Pavements and some roads requiring lots of repair. Mother Nature can be so destructive.

We saw a reef shark from the beach when we were off the grid snd turtles. Was wonderful. We have already booked to come back up this way for the next two years. That is how long you have to book to get in. It’s very popular during our winter months.

I heard from Kandie and she sends hugs to everyone. She is busy sorting the house out with her stepsons and still in shock.

Thinking of those struggling and happy for those who have new cars or good news.

We are still in Exmouth and head north in a few days. Waving and sending hugs

Default Hello

Waving hello!
Welcome Ellen of Texas!
Glad to see you pop in Jayne! The rain in an RV sounds crazy- I am not sure I could sleep..... but I guess if you are tired enough..... : )
Shirl- we watched Inventing Anna a while ago- hubby is also enamored with Julia Garner! When you are done, google what is happening with Anna now- quite a crazy story!
Yeah Kathy- another letterboxer! I have found it so fun, but feel like a drug smuggler at time if people are nearby! Love that you shared your carved stamps : ) My letterbox name is Mcschmidty, and I asked my DIL to cut me a stamp using her laser, and I have a state of Illinois with a cardinal inside of it as my stamp. I initially asked for it to be 2 1/4 " tall, but so many of the log books are smaller, she remade it to be 1 3/8" tall. I usually write my name as mcschmidty and add the date. I have found out you can search along the interstates at rest stops....darn- too bad I did not know that when we drove to Stephi's! Oh well! I have found 11 boxes and have hidden 2 with one more ready to go! Will probable put it somewhere tomorrow.
Catherine- how wonderful to find a great low mileage car for DD1! Have a wonderful family day tomorrow!
Jan- yeah to being done with painting too!
Melodie- love your post- I love to 'hoard' beautiful papers and shimmery cardstocks : )
Jean- me too! I am so happy to have no where to go for June! Wahoo! So wonderful you could see the granddaughters perform- so awesome! Great memories!

We had SIL over this AM. Hubby went and picked her up, she is not really gaining weight with the feeding tube, but is maintaining her weight which is good. Ray made her eggs and I picked up the Gluten free muffins she likes at Trader Joes. Her tumor is inoperable, so next attempt in her medical process with be 2 weeks of radiation. Fingers and toes crossed!
While I was a Trader Joes, I picked up some wine. I was not carded..... so I told the checkout girl I die my hair with gray streaks so I can buy alcohol, her reply was- it's working! LOL I thought her snarky reply was the best I have heard.... too funny!
I made a few cards today and did a bit of cleaning in my craft space- it needs a few more hours! That is a never ending story, as you all know very well!
I have to make a card for my niece and her husband- she is the one in Texas that was married in November in a nice ceremony we attended, 5/7 siblings there. Anyway, her young BIL (her husband's brother) was killed in a traffic accident last week- he was leaving work and heading home and was hit head on by a semi driver who was 'distracted'. My brother said there was not a dry eye in the entire church....... He was just 28. So tragic!
Please say a prayer for my daughter- she is still struggling with the death of the student that committed suicide- I am happy we took her dog for a few days last week- one less thing to do for her, especially with Prom. She is almost done with the school year. Teaching is not the same job it was even a few years ago. Kids are not the same. But, I believe God puts you where you belong if you follow your heart, and although a tough job, all jobs are stressful and you will make a difference where ever you land! She is still working at Starbucks on some weekends and does a 4AM open shift- so crazy. I am not sure why she dies this job..... but she likes it.
I cannot get her to do art.... yet! LOL Such a wonderful stress release to create for me! I got a friend to take a beginning watercolor class and I will take it as a review- starts 6/6. The last time I took the class, I was the only level 1 student and there were 2 others painting and that was it. This time, there were only 2 spots left, so it will be a full class..... She goes through all of the brush strokes, wet in wet, dry brush, etc...... which will be a great review!

Yikes- I had better get to bed, the time has gotten away from me!

Shelly

Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day.

Now that I'm rested, I can respond to everyone's posts.
Welcome, Teri! Alcohol inks: one of my favorite things, I have lots. Marabu inks are quite affordable and work well. A little smellier than Ranger but....work in a very ventilated area or outside. The Ranger Pearls are awesome.

Welcome, Ellen. Melody, that's a good tip.

Shelly, I'm sorry you were not feeling well. Best wishes to your newly minted Dr. Good thoughts sent to your teacher daughter. There are no easy jobs in the world any more, I don't think. Corporations etc. expect a lot these days. Thinking of your SIL...man, life is so unfair. And I'm so sorry about the death in your family. How awful.

Jaynie, glad to hear from you. Torrents of rain must not be fun in Winnie. You're seeing some beautiful things. And I so agree about the guns. On our national CBS Sunday Morning show yesterday, they featured a Mom in Tasmania whose daughter was killed by gunfire long ago and that's why OZ got their act together about guns. The NRA should have cancelled their convention. I have a long time friend who always collected guns and knives, was a lifetime member of the NRA. He told me a couple of years ago he ended his membership. I sent him a text thanking him for that again. People over guns.

Ann, you're an excellent Grandma. Last weekend, I was in charge of the girlies so Liz could get some things done. They have moved back to their house, even though the bathroom remodel isn't quite done. Just a few days of running back and forth between two houses drove me crazy. I forgot things up there because they were at the other house.

I need to check out letterboxing!!!!!

Yay for your daughter's new to her car, Catherine. We're getting hot and humid here but it will change tomorrow later in the day.

Happy anniversary, Jan and yay about the painting project.

Thinking of Kandie, how sad that she felt alone at the funeral. In retrospect, having someone there just for her would have been a good idea. When my brother died, my sister asked some OT friends of hers to be my Mom's companions so we could visit with others. It worked well.

My son Joe and wife Leah adopted not one, not two, but three 1 year old cats last week. Had no idea they felt ready to do that. They always regretted that they didn't adopt their cat Lemmy's sibling and the three cats had bonded so well, it was an easy decision. They're slowly getting comfortable, finally have a bit of the house to explore. They were so scared at first that they kept them in a spare bedroom for the first week. Two are brothers. The rescue agency thinks that their litter was poisoned, they had a lot of health issues and one of them had his front leg amputated from infection. Humans can be so cruel, unless the poisoning wasn't intentional. Humans are careless too. The third one looks a lot like the brothers, except a shorter coat, and he bonded with the brothers at the foster home. I'll post pictures soon.

Thinking of Anne and her skin cancer. Because of a friend, I know what that surgery is. She had it on the top of her head and would never have found it but for her daughter standing next to her as Rosie was sitting at her computer.

yay for Annette's move! Any word on if she sold her house?

Hi to Shirl, Kathy and everyone else I might have missed. This is a very caring group and I love you all.

Shelly, I signed my trail name and stamped but forgot to date it. I'm looking for a self inking stamp that has a coffee cup. I'm using an SU stamp from the Morning Cup set but it would be nice not to have to carry the ink pad, although I might need it if the stamps in the boxes aren't self inking. The group of boxes the other day were all kids self inking stamps. I know what you mean about feeling like a smuggler! Luckily, we only saw people near the last one and they were heading out the tail while we were coming back. The trail was almost a mile long so I got some exercise! The other two are on the 3.92 mile trail so we decided to go back another time because we didn't have good footwear or long pants. Well, DH always wears jeans but I had capris on. Ticks are bad in this area. Mom found one on dad's sock and he doesn't leave the house so she's guessing it rode in on a cat. Glad she puts white socks on him.

Happy Memorial Day! Remembering all of those we've lost. It must be a very hard day for our dear Kandie. Huge hugs to her and every Alpha today!

Getting ready to travel to Wisconsin tomorrow. Should be home late Thursday night. Long trip 26 hours, but we are taking 2 days to travel this time. Yay! Small victories.

Welcome Ellen!

Good morning! This is the day I always think of my Uncle Howard who I never got to meet. He was one of my mom's older brothers and was killed in WWII. I honor him and the many others like him who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Though it is Memorial day, we have a big, loud thing going on outside. The tree guy set up to come today to take down the tree that was concerning us that it might hit the garage. I'm so glad to see it go. I think it would hit our garage and our neighbor's house and is technically on our neighbor's property. I hate to lose trees but, since we are till dealing with the hole in our roof from December, I don't want another thing like that!

My brother, SIL, and nephew are coming this evening for a BBQ.

I stayed up way too late last night doing more stamping for my DTGD challenge in July. I'm having so much fun! But need to think about my alpha card for this week.

Kathy, I'm so glad that he came and told you about the mailboxes. It is lovely to know there are honest, responsible people out there!

I agree, Jean, too many people think it is just a day off and don't know the meaning behind it.

Welcome, Ellen, so glad you have joined us! You'll find that Melody has lots of wonderful suggestions for alternate ways to do things.

Jayne, glad you popped in and glad you have heard from Kandie.

Shelly, that is so funny about what the checker said to you. Good thing you have a good sense of humor, some people might not have responded so well!

That is so sad about your niece's BIL. That is one of many things I am thankful for at the end of the day - that we have all made it safely home because it isn't a given. And some of the driving I've seen around here, let's just say, wow! I think some people stayed home too long and forgot how to drive!

Will add your daughter to my prayers.

Jean, so glad you are rested now. Wow to three one year old cats! My youngest was sad to only adopt Wesley as she had a sibling there and DD2 wanted to bring both home.

Ann, what a blessing you are to your kids and grands!

Gracie, I'm so glad you are taking the trip in a couple of days instead of one long haul. Blessings on your trip.

I'm sure ready for my finger to be healed up. It is progressing - it was a deep cut - but much too slowly for my liking, of course.

I guess I'd better get busy and get ready for my family to come over this evening.

Oh oh, Catherine... you're putting me on the spot! LOL Not that I mind, really. When you grow up reusing, recycling, remaking, substituting, etc., I guess it never leaves you.

Welcome Ellen. You are on the right track already, lol, as you do not have to do all the letters. Just sayin', lol. I think I was the only one who used copics for my A card but they still qualify.

Gracie safe travels.

Jayne, thanks for all the comments you left. Nice to see those this Monday morning. Yes, I watched the trailer of the Lincoln Lawyer and it looked interesting. There is another one that might be good on Netflix as well. The anatomy of a scandal or some title like that. We finished Anna last night. Still thinking about her.

Shelly we did google Anna. What a story. She got released in 2021 but then got taken into custody again to be deported I think back to Germany.

Kathy, thanks for clearing that up and glad nothing happened to your sister.

Jean you will be glad of some alone time now I imagine.

Hugs to all,
Shirl

Good to see you back Jean,

Gracie have a safe trip.

we are looking to book flights for the autumn but now need an appointment to talk about travel insurance, they are making life complicated for some reason.

Jayne lovely to see you, I remember torrential rain when we lived in the caravan and lightening, terrifying !

I tried alcohol lift on my inks, didn’t work too well but the ink isn’t all dry even after a day!
hope it is today so I can finish my card.
I have to clean the conservatory windows this morning as I can see smears where we wiped the paint splashes off. my craft room is very clean on the outside now it’s painted,I even cleaned the patio doors too, pity the inside is a mess haha

Wish I had Jan here. I have some painting to do too but it's not going to get done today since it's supposed to be in the 90s. DH finished putting the mailboxes back up. He had the pole and platform in yesterday but wanted to wait for the cement to dry before putting the boxes on the platform.

Funny sign Melody. I'll share it with DS2. He loves that stuff. He's the one who sent me the one I posted here on the 29th!

DH went to get a new pulley and belt for his zero turn mower. The pulley broke the other day and he had to use mom's tractor to finish the lawn. He mows mom's, my sister's and our yards. That includes weed whacking and push mowing some.

The garden is going to need watered. It's getting dry, and no rain today. I went out several times last night because they said we could have a spectacular meteor shower but there was nothing. I did get a spectacular star show because the skies were clear. about the meteor shower, they said it would either be a complete dead or complete spectacular site. Turned out to be a dud even with clear skies.

Dad had a temperature last night but we think it's the heat. I tried to convince mom to turn the air on even if she has to cover him if he gets chilled. I don't think this heat is helping. My niece and her husband put dad in the shower last night and his temp dropped.

Melody that’s very true

kathy we start painting at 7.30 before the sun gets too hot, the windows were done by 9 am, then I painted under the coving in our bedroom, we had some damp this year with all the rain, Steve’s hoping that’s iIT! Haha

that’s the trouble with ac can be too cold , our new fans are really good, run silently and just cool enough so we are using them instead of ac for now.

Morning...yes it's morning:

Poop is poop, regardless of the type. Ha. I've stepped in many piles of dog poop in my time, guess I'm not very clean as I've never disinfected a shoe.

Kathy, hope your Dad is ok. Catherine, honoring your Uncle Howard.

Jan, I want to live in a villa. Maybe I need to start calling my house a villa.

Rebekah, how is your recovery going? Ann, what is the status of your foot? I've probably missed some info.

Linda, how difficult for you and this caretaker thing. Are they qualified CNAs or some other kind of training required? I'm not sure what kinds of needs you have but I hope you find someone perfect for you.

Going for lunch with some high school friends today. We have been dropping like flies and having to cancel for Covid, older parents needing help, grandchildren needing care. We probably had about 20 confirmed until yesterday, now down to about 10. It's the way our lives are, I guess. 70 year olds rule!!!!!

We were pretty cloudy here last night so didn't try for the meteor shower. I get notices for when the space station comes over but it doesn't look promising for tonight. I've seen it lots of times but I still get a charge out of it.

I've seen a meme about going on an expensive vacation to the gas station. Funny, but not. Our gas is about 4.50 or so, depending on the day and where.

My best luck with alcohol lift ink is to simply make an ai background, kind of like polished stone or something random, brayer a thin layer of the lift ink (I have a reinker of that) onto it and pull a print. You can pull several just by brayering more reinker until it gets too light. You just use regular cardstock for your pulls. They're quite lovely. I'm going to try regular reinkers with alcohol today, for the CC.

Kittens! Two of the cats (the black and white Finn and the gray stripe Gus) are my daughter's, the three orangey cats are my sons....Starbuck (Star), Moonstruck (Moon) and Apricot. I think Apricot is the short hair one. They came with the names. I think the pose Gus is in is quite amazing. Finn is playing with catnip, hence his wild expression.

Just got back from grocery shopping. DH has figured out that it goes faster if we go together (most of the time). Of course, I tend to grab things that weren't on the list. I'm not nearly as organized for shopping as he is. He makes his list according to the layout of the store. Perhaps a bit OCD?

Then I went out and picked asparagus and some rhubarb before the rain comes and the heat gets too much for me.
