The Dahle does have a clear paperguide that is about 3/4" wide but I can still slip a small piece of paper under it and hold it down with the paperguide to get a nice straight cut.

I forgot to add that my Dahle trimmer does not have the rubber mat strip that the blade digs into like the Friskar does. I think that is what helps it to make such straight cuts....nothing to divert...
