Default paper pads

I thought somewhere someone mentioned getting hot press watercolor paper for some projects, but all I found was cold press. I did get a pad of mixed media paper. Am I looking for the wrong thing or do they call it something other than hot press?

As far as I know it's only called 'hot press'.

When I bought hot press watercolor paper, I remember it was difficult to find online and I had to buy pretty large size sheets; I did not find any hot press in pads. That was a few years ago, though, and maybe now they have pads available.

I wanted hot press because of the smooth surface, but I have to say I am very happy with Ranger's watercolor paper that is smooth on one side and textured on the other side.

As for the hot press, some of our water colorists on SCS will know wayyyy more than I do, but that was my experience.

I don't think it has another name (although you might see "hot pressed" occasionally rather than "hot press").

I'm in the UK so I may not be that much help on sources but I know Dick Blick carries some - here are the search results for "hot press" on the web site. Some of the options (the Strathmore ready cut sheets, for example) come in a choice of finishes so you may need to read descriptions to be sure of what's on offer.

The smooth finish of hot press does make a difference if you're using stamps with lots of detail but it does tend to be more expensive than cold press so you may want to pick and choose which projects you use it on.

HTH!

Thanks for the recommendation for the Ranger paper.

I was unable to find any hot press watercolor paper at the craft stores - only cold press. I ended up going to a local art shop to buy mine. It came in a huge sheet (I mean HUGE) and I had to cut them smaller.

I purchased 8 1/2 x 11 hot press paper in a loose leaf package from Marco's Papers during a convention. They have a website if you are interested in that size single sheet paper. Used to do scenic stamping on it all the time and it worked great.

I saw lots of other pads. Linen, smooth, etc. They didn't say cold press or hot press.

Were they marked as specifically watercolor paper? It's produced with a different process so the surface will react differently to wet media than "regular" paper or cardstock. If they didn't mention watercolor on them, they're probably not designed for use with such wet media and while they may be OK, they may pill up, buckle/warp etc if you get them very wet. If they were marked as suitable for watercoloring then why not give them a try and see how you like them?

I can't remember if they specifically said watercolor but will look again when I go back. Definitely will give them a try if they say watercolor. I know the one was really smooth. The mixed media pad I got says vellum surface.

The best place to find "Hot Press" watercolor paper is at an Art Supply store. The best one on line is Blick.

Leebeth is correct. You can get it at blick.com although I've gotten it at hobby lobby for my granddaughter. I like being able to use the 40% off coupon.

I've seen it at Michaels (or it might have been Hobby Lobby) but in most cases, you'll have to look where the large 30 x 22 sheets are, I think they're mostly available in that large, single sheet area
