I found this post on the StencilGirl blog and thought I'd give it a try. It gives two versions of a reverse stencil technique. I did the one that uses either gesso as your first layer and then adds acrylic paint on top of that or uses acrylic paint for both. I found that the one using gesso gives a clearer, more detailed look. When using two layers of paint some of the background does pull off when you remove the stencil showing the white base. It all depends on what look you're going for as to which materials you want to choose. It's best to use a stencil with larger openings rather than a smaller all over pattern.
Fun, thank you Polly.
I had a minor heart attack after writing a lengthy description, because for some reason when I hit submit, a whole page of really old uploads was what came up, and I was afraid I'd lost it. I've been wanting to use the hollyhock dies for months now, so today was a good day to do it
Want to make sure I understand (sometimes I have brain freeze, even in this heat...or brain boil). Gesso first, let it dry. Then put a layer of acrylic down, use a towel or wipe to lift paint, pull up stencil. Is there another step that I'm missing? I know she added some other colors over it, transparent I would guess.

Yes, Jean...that's what I did. On my sample I did the one using both acrylics and I also found that using the baby wipe worked much better than a paper towel. My attachments show both ways to do it..the pink one is the one I did using gesso. The others were putting down paint first, dry, then another coat of a different color paint and stencil...then wipe.
Wonderful challenge, Polly! I think I need to start doing the challenges again, it really helps me to focus on a project. Something I've had a hard time with this past year or so! MIX437 Druid's Inn by sleepyinseattle at Splitcoaststampers
