I had plans to buy an Original Scrapbox Workbox when we get our tax refund and convert our guest room into a guest/stamping room. I was thinking about it yesterday, moving furniture in my mind (yeah, there's a lot of empty space in there anyway!), when I suddenly remembered:
I have a desk/storage unit at my mom's house, and she doesn't want it anymore! My dad built it for me when I was a teen, and it's gorgeous. It is white and has a light blue laminate desktop, with tons of storage - it's actually the length of two desks, with adjustable shelves above the desk section, and a hutch with plexiglass doors above the other section. The second section was originally designed as a spot to hold my stereo, and the spot where the stereo unit goes is a pull-out platform, which I think would be a perfect place to keep my paper cutter and pull it out when I need it.
Like I said, it is white and light blue. And the colors in our guest room? Yellow, white and light blue!
Don't get me wrong - I would love to have an Original Scrapbox!!! But to have something that my Dad made for me that has many happy memories attached to it? I can't pass that up! And I could use the $1200 for more stamps instead! LOL!

Reason: add info/update
Have fun Penny! I think it's great to re-purpose something. Just think of how much fun you can have with that tax return buying goodies to put in your desk!!!

DH just reminded me that we're going to need to buy bunk beds for the boys with that money! But surely they won't cost $1200!

How cool is that? You get something back that holds good memories because your Dad made it just for you AND you can spend your tax refund on something your family really needs.
That is very cool! Since your Dad made it that makes it all the better. I'd love to see a picture of it once you have it all settled into it's new home!
how cool! having something with sentimental value is so important! i have my aunts sewing machine from the 40's in my craft room in a special spot. it doesnt run anymore, but the beauty is still there!

That's AWESOME! Would love to see photos when you have it all set up -- and you're my kind of gal ;)...spend that money on STAMPS girl!! LOL
Since we no longer own a truck, it'll be a few months until my dad can bring it down for me. I'll be sure and post pictures then.

OK, here are the pics of my new stamping area. It is also my "office", so I am still working on the final layout of everything on the desk. The keyboard is cordless so I can put it up on the shelf in front of the inks when I'm crafting.
As I said in the first post, the furniture was built by my dad when I was a teenager - all we had to do was pick it up from my mom's house! As you can see, it is still our guest room, also. The bed is a trundle bed, so it will sleep 2 people, while giving me more floor space. My aunt and I made the curtains, valance, bedskirt and pillow shams. I had them on a queen bed, but with some creative folding, was able to use them here, too. (more money for stamps!)
The ink storage unit came from www.suink.net. It was a special order as it holds 75 pads.
My DH built the punch storage unit - we got the idea from someone on here, but I don't remember who. It is all recycled wood, and the rails are the Bygel 21" ones from Ikea.
The ribbon storage is a 4-shelf rack that is meant to give more space inside pantries. I got it at Lowe's. I hung it from over-the-door hooks instead of permanently attaching it. The ribbon scraps/pieces at the bottom are on binder clips, and attached to the unit with lanyard hooks from Michael's.
My 8.5 x 11 paper is out on the shelves - my 12x12 and DSP is inside the closet along with a few larger things (and a bunch of miscellaneous non-stamping stuff - LOL!).
Anyway, here are the pics if I can figure out how to do this, and more in the next posts.

What a beautiful room! I am so jealous! Would you please invite me as your guest so that I can play in your guest room? It's very warm and cozy. I am doing my craftroom now. Will get some light fixture today. May steal your pale yellow paint idea.
Your father did a beautiful job on the unit. It's just perfect.

this is perfect! I love the light colors and that fab ribbon storage. Neat how it fits so perfectly on that wall~ like your dad was thinking far ahead when he made it.
What a great desk area - and to think it's something your dad made for you! If I was an overnight guest at your house, I wouldn't be sleeping - I'd be stamping!
Penny, it's fantastic! Well worth the wait, I think?
Absolutely worth the wait! Now I need to actually LOCK the door so I can stamp without a chorus of "Mom, Hey mom. Mom! Mom...mom...mom..." But as DH said, if I do that, they might try to break it down!

You're welcome to come as my guest and stamp with me! When I have friends over to stamp, I have a sturdy folding table to pull out so we can both stamp in the room. (My stamp camps are held out in my living room area.)
Good luck on your craftroom. It can be a challenge to get done, but when you do - it's awesome!

I am jealous too! Not only for the neat and organized factor, but for the incredible desk that your dad made for you! What a wonderful memory of your dad.
Well, admittedly, my Dad is pretty good at building things. For example, he built the house that I grew up in! He has also built me a curio cabinet for my miniature teasets that I collect, and he built my DH and I a beautiful entertainment armoire for our living room. He's a pretty good guy, too, on top of his building skills.
