I've read through the hundreds (it's thousands now, right?) of posts in the Cuttlebugitis thread, as well as other threads on the boards regarding die-cutting and compatibility between dies and machines.

So, I made up a chart on Cuttlebug Sandwich Stacks based on info I found on the boards, and PMs from users that had tried some unique things.

This list is NOT complete, but I'll add to it and repost if SCSers have additional findings. Hopefully, someone else will find this as useful as I have.

Enjoy!

NOTE: The Cuttlebugs tend to differ in space inside the machine, so be sure to ERR ON THE THIN SIDE when putting new stacks into your machine!

Just a quick question, when you say "be sure to ERR ON THE THIN SIDE when putting new stacks into your machine", what do you mean by that? I do not have a cuttlebug yet, but I am thinking of getting one (just wanting to check things out before I buy, as it is quite expensive, and we don't have any kind of coupons here in Norway). Is that something I will understand when I get it? I don't understand what the word ERR means, either...

ERR=To make an error or a mistake.

by using the caps, i meant to emphasize, and i see how it could be mistaken for some kind of acronym. sorry!

because the cuttlebug isn't a high-tech, expensive, carefully calibrated machine the space for the plates to go in, which become compressed when fed through the machine, aren't exactly identical from machine to machine. so, if i told you that in my machine i needed a "C" plate, then a cardboard shim, my cardstock, my die, and an "A" plate it might be a tad too thick or a tad too thin for your machine.

if you always err on the thin side, you won't hurt your machine by forcing a too-thick stack through it. if the stack is too thin, it just won't cut, or emboss and you can easily fix it by beefing up the stack a little.

does that make more sense?

that makes more sense. You are really trying to say that we should try with a thinner sandwich before making it thicker if needed.. Just got my cuttlebug two days ago, and I'm loving it =)

Rubber Sheet (Plumbers gasket rubber or tan embossing mat from Spellbinders)

You can emboss without misting; however, if you mist your card stock with either water or rubbing alcohol, you will get a crisper impression. I prefer alcohol, since it dries much faster.
Thank you! This has been driving me nuts!

Question: Is there a way to emboss the longer dies (12 inches or so) sold by Spellbinder ... WITHOUT have to do the operation twice in my Cuttlebug.

I guess I am also asking if I should buy the Epic 6 - which seems to be doing good with the long dies.

Thank you for your answer.

i believe you can use the cuttlebug for the longer dies, but you have to buy the longer plates that fit the die. most people don't want that expense, so they use the regular plates and pass each half through the die separately.

i don't really know anything about the Epic 6 so can't really make a recommendation there. personally, i'd rather have one machine, than spend more money on another - but that's me ;)

Thank you so much for your answer ... You are making me realize that here too, I would rather "manage" only one machine ... Sometimes I get carried away (a little !!!)

Bye for now

I haven't tried this, but you might be able to use the long plates from Sizzix that are made for the sizzlit decorative strip dies. I'm not talking about the wide ones for the XL dies. I'm referring to the narrow ones, which are about 2-3/4" wide by 13" long. There is a decorative strip spacer platform (thick) and a set of 2 decorative strip cutting pads (thin). Maybe someone who has both a cuttlebug and big shot would be able to answer this.

Thumbs up Great thread!

:mrgreen:Thank you so much for your time and energy putting this together! One question: I used my sizzlet dies from SU! with two B's and one A plate but the cut did not go all the way through. If I put an extra piece of cardstock for a shim, would that be enough pressure? You are absolutely right about the C plate-I didn't do it because I was sure it would crack-Thanx again!:p

Default HELP!: Cuttlebug + Stampin' Up Texturized Plates

Hi everyone!

I have just brought the Stampin' Up Texturized Plates. However, I cannot get it to work with my Cuttlebug! :S

I got recommended two recipes (below), but they do not work (the sandwich is too thick that it doesn't go through the machine).

1. For a deeper impression (from bottom layer to top):
A plate
C plate
Sizzix texture plate
Paper
1 tan embossing mat (Spellbinder)

2. For a lighter impression (from bottom layer to top):
A plate
B plate
Sizzix texture plate
Paper
2 tan embossing mats (Spellbinder)

Could someone please give me some other "recipes" for this?

TIA!!

i don't have any of the SU! texture plates, but am guessing that they're similar to other brand texture plates. there are several stacks noted in the attachment of the first post.

stacks copied here:
1. Plate A, BI texture Plate, Cardstock, Silicone Rubber pad (from BISK), Impressions Pad (from BISK)
or
2. Plate A, Fiskars texture Plate, Cardstock, tan Wizard pad, black or tan Wizard pad, (possible Cardstock shim,) Plate B

a couple of things to note:
if your stack is too big, then try substituting a plate for a smaller plate; or substitute a piece or two of thin cardboard (like cereal box cardboard) for one of the plates.

HTH

edited to add: here's a stack i found searching the SCS forums...

Check back in post 511. Using a mist of water or rubbing alcohol makes a lot of difference in the impression you get.

Oh, boy. I just realized that the sandwich I gave in post 511 was missing a B plate. I went back & edited that post, so now it should be correct. I am SOO SORRY if you tried it and it wouldn't work for you. My bad!

My sandwich is actually thinner than her #2 stack. I only use one rubber embossing mat.

Thank you so much. I have been dying (no pun intended) to buy the big shot for the SU dies and couldn't bring myself to spend that. I would much prefer spend it on a cricut. Thanks

Thankyou for your list! I was really excited. Because I am cheap, I made some of my own shims for use with Fiskars plates. Two sheets of batting glued to one another and then glued to a piece of medium thickness chipboard. It is working out wonderfully!

Default CB Sandwich

Can someone tell me what the "sandwich" is for Spellbinders Impressabilities? I can't seem to find the right layer.

Thanks ahead of time,

A plate,B plate,Spellbinders tan mat, cardstock and a shim. The shim I use is a piece cut from my Scor-Pal packaging.
It turned out perfectly The key I believe is the card stock weight paper. I use Beckett Expressions 65# paper. This works perfectly. You can order the paper from gvarnies.com. Arnies has great pricing and superb customer service. Hope this works for you. ~~ Carol

This is awesome! Thank you so much!! I have had my Cuttlebug for over a year and love it, but I have only used the embossing folders. This will help me branch out a bit. TFS

Help! Is there a way to use the SU bigz XL dies in the CB with one pass? Are there longer plates available for the CB? Do you need to use an embossing pad to get good score lines? I just purchased the SU matchbox XL die and am having trouble making it work. Thanks for any help. I have searched this forum and can't find the answer to my questions.

One more question please! When using the Bigx XL die in the CB do you put cutting side face up or down? Thanks!

Personally I think it is a matter of personal preference! It cuts the same either way.

And as far as using the longer dies you could use two sets of plates one at each end so you can pass in thru all at once.

Or try the longer (the ones for sizzix long strips) narrow plates and place two side by side. You would need two sets - one set side by side for top and one set side by side for bottom.

I personally have not tried either of these but have seen posts from others that have.

I am deciding between a few die templates and its come between the STampin Up Top Note die and a die set from spellbinders. I want to know if one or both of these will work with my cuttlebug? Any help?!!
