Default Bought me a new toy

While at Hobby Lobby tonight I came across something call a Make Art
Stay-tion  from Wendy  Vecchi.  It is a 12 X 12 magnetic surface an it comes with 4 nice big magnets an a magnetic ruler.   It works for stenciling plus you can work on it.  With my 40% off it was $11.99.  I brought it home an tried it out.  I was able to stencil 3 Bgs in a short time an my paper never moved.
I can't tell you how many BG that get ruined because the paper shifts, not with this.  I am one happy stamper with this new toy.  It you see one check it out.  I will be getting all my stencils back out with this.
Happy Stamping an Stenciling
Marcia

I have one too........use it for stenciling.....when I use my blender brushes and find it useful for layouts too.  All around great addition to the arsenal.

I have one, too.  I like it a lot.   I'm thinking of getting the small one: https://rangerink.com/blogs/blog/wendy-vecchi-make-art-product-launch-1

I don't think this was well advertised.  I happened to see it on a sneak peak video last year from Creativation and since I seem to hold everything in my lap to align things and or study the layout, I figured it was the perfect thing for me.  Don't know if that's because of eyesight or a quirk but I've always done it.  It was an added bonus for stenciling etc.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Ranger is doing a tutorial for us in a couple of weeks and they've used one in the video - I'm a little tempted as well! The magnets are so large and sturdy.

I must have been under that same rock right beside you, because I’d never heard of it before you mentioned it. ;)

FYI...I was putting this onto my wishlist and then I read reviews which said that the grid lines only lasted 2 weeks.  Hopefully, they are listening and make an improved version soon.

I don’t have the product, but I had heard this too.  Then, I saw on their website that you are not to use solvent based or harsh cleaners.  I am wondering if that was the issue with taking off the lines. They now have the non stick mat to use with it in case you are using staz on ink etc.

The reviewers especially said that they were not using anything on the grid side and were being gentle.  I did see that you are to use a non-stick mat for the messy stuff (and magnets help hold that flat).  It isn't the first time that a product had grid lines coming off, even for non-crafting items, so sometimes I remember to look for raised markings at least.

Interesting. I would want to know if the people in this thread who purchased it have had any problems.

I took a look at mine yesterday and the grid marks have done a little fading on the left and/or right sides but not enough to be unusable.  I hadn't noticed it before and it doesn't bother me.  I've had mine for about a year and I do use it a lot.  Hope this helps.

I saw it demo’d a while back but the size plus already using methods that work stopped me. But I’m glad some of you have it for questions!

Does anyone use this on top of the Tim glass mat (which I have)?
Also, how this is better/different than using low-tack tape to hold stencils? I use yellow (least sticky) Frog Tape at the stencil top to make a hinge to lift up the stencil to check results, and the stencil can drop down to exactly the same place if I need to continue or consider color placement, etc.

When water is used and drying naturally is the plan, the piece can be taped to a thin cutting board so it can be moved to the side.

So I’m set but a tool junky/addict and like to understand benefits or drawbacks of All the Things.

FYI:  Don't use alcohol inks on this.  It stains them.

This thread reminded me that I already own something very similar from eons ago: https://www.amazon.com/Basic-Grey-Magnetic-Precision-Mat/dp/B0019LOZUU/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
It must be retired, since there is one for sale on ebay (sans ruler) and that's the only one I could find. Glad I still have mine! I'll have to test it out and see what I think...

The main difference I could think of right off the bat is that the Basic Grey one is a self-healing mat, meaning (if it's like my self-healing mat) it's not a slick surface. The Make Art Stay-tion is metal, so liquid mediums like paste, gel, ink, etc., won't soak in. I got one for Christmas, but had not heard of the grid lines coming off. Hopefully I won't have that issue! At least my mom (who bought it for me) did get to use Hobby Lobby's coupon.

I have the Make Art Stay-tion, I like it for lining up die cut letters on my cards.  I like that the magnets don't kill your fingers if you get them too close together.  I've only used it for stenciling a few times and it works well, but my go to is Pixie Spray.  I'm not sure if the surface coating will hold up over time, hopefully it wont rub off.

Good to know - thanks! Maybe I'll wrap it with some clear vinyl or something so it will be easier to clean. Or maybe I'll just default to the glass mat for messy and use this for other things that might need a grid and magnets...

I pulled out my ancient 12x12 glass Slice mat and am using it for now, works just fine.

"Works just fine."  Magnets work on it?  You may be comparing apples to bananas.

I don’t think this tool is for me after watching her demo it and showing the 7” one at Creativation.

But she said something about the new ones - maybe just the 7” one? - having a slightly different surface now, slicker? She also said she wouldn’t get Archival inks on it. And addressed how to cover it to keep it clean and have it not move around. Here’s the video:
