Anyone have any craft ideas for a Wild Safari VBS?
Hello I'm looking for ideas for our VBS. I'm in charge of the crafts. The theme is Wild Safari and has animals like the lion, giraffe, hippo, and elephant. The lesson is about the Lords prayer. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks...
2. Safari Maps: Made from large paper bags cut open, wrinkled up (by hand...fun for kids to do!), then opened and hand torn around the edged to make it look old then painted/colored on with 'trails' leading to different terrain markings and pictures of safari animals on it.
3. Cut vests out of large brown paper grocery bags and let the kids decorate them and call them "Safari Vest" that they can wear. (You could make safari hats out of paper bags, too, but I think it's a more complicated/time consuming project with watered-down glue...or something?!)
4. They can draw/color their favorite safari animal with background on a 6" x 6" (or so) white c/s and then have them make popsicle stick frames and glue the picture behind the frame.
5. Here are coloring pages related to the Lord's Prayer... http://www.coloring.ws/prayer.htm
Kids could make a booklet using them with a safari-like cover...holes punched and use yarn/jute/etc. to 'sew' the book together.
You could somehow relate God's Kingdom (Lord's Prayer) with the Animal Kingdom...?
These are inexpensive ideas if budget is an issue.
Hopefully something here will trigger your creativity! Have fun!
you may want to check out the Pursuit Of Craftyness blog this week - it's featuring a lot of the same animals, too. Here's the link: www.pursuitofcraftyness.blogspot.com HTH!

thank you... I think I have one idea from there...
There are those great Unity animal stamps....I don't know how large they are but you could stamp a bunch, cut them out, let the kids color and use as name badges.
How many kids will be attending VBS? That should make a difference in how "difficult" the project should be. The more kids you have the more simple the project--unless you have lots of help or very small groups.
I was the craft director for two years running at my church. It was exhausting. But then VBA (Vacation Bible Adventure) is one of our two biggest community outreach programs during the year. We have on average 400 kids from age 5-12 attend every year. I had about 6 people help prep the materials and then the group leaders kind of helped the kids in their group as they came through.
We've had a safari theme, Indiana Jones (last year), Pirate (we built the fore portion of a ship in our worship center-it became part of the stage, it was really awesome).
Ummm....some crafty things we did:
-We made shakers out of plastic plates (the kind that snap together-i forget what brand they are. Anyhow the kids had a choice of dried beans or rice. They assembled the shaker then decorated the outer edges with brown, tan, yellow and orange yard to make the mane of a lion then they drew a lion face on. Before snapping the plates together we put a bit of glue around the rim to help them stay stuck longer. We used double sided sticky tape for the yarn.
I really like the punch art animals-you could attach them to those super jumbo paperclips so they can make bookmarks
OR how about adding a giraffe head to a ruler and the lesson could be about how salvation and following the narrow path will give us our reward in heaven.
these are just a couple of things that popped into my head before I've had my full dose of caffeine ;).

Looking back at my #4 post above, you could take it further if you could take a digital photo of each child (like on the 1st day), print them out and let them make the popsicle stick frame (decorated with foam animals/flowers) and put their own picture in it (behind it)...this could be done like on the 2nd day and goes up on a bulletin board/wall with the heading "We're in God's Kingdom...". Then they could take them home on the last day.
Then they'd have one for the "Animal Kingdom" and their own face in "God's Kingdom".

Thanks for the ideas.. that Kingdom of son catalog is what we have but most of the projects are cheap and most made of recycled cans and things... not enough time to collect
Love the picture idea, will definately make some kind of picture frame

I got Oriental Trading's craft catalog today and they had an Our Father craft. It's made of foam pieces and has Jesus holding his arms out over children and the Lord's Prayer underneath. I generally find craft things for our VBS from either Oriental Trading or S&S Worldwide. Sometimes I wish I was more creative, but it does make things a little easier to have it all in kits. Hope your VBS goes well!
Have you check with the publisher of your VBS kit(kingdom of the son?) to see if they have any suggestions? The companies we have worked with (Group and Lifeway) have active forums with lots of great craft ideas.
