This is just my personal opinion, but I find the watermarks distracting. When I see a card I want to be able to look at all of it, but some watermarks actually obscure my view. Maybe that's the point, but I prefer the copyright information be somewhere else within the card jpeg...like in a lower corner.
IS THERE A SAMPLE ANYWHERE OF WHAT YOU LADIES ARE ALL TALKING ABOUT.I thought a watermark was simply using a versamark pad and stamping the image in a versamark padthen on cardstock.obviously I'm wrong here and you are al talking about something much differant.any photo's so I can get a better idea of what your talking about.

Yes, what you describe is also called a watermark, but I think what everyone is referring to in this thread is a copyright watermark. To me a watermark is transparent text over the face of a card that lists the copyright information-which would be done whenever you post a card using a stamp from a company that has an Angel Policy. (someone correct me if this isn't correct) Some people are referring to a watermark as ANY colored copyright information on a card, but to me a watermark is clear or transparent. Did that help?

Oops, forgot to mention that if the watermark isn't in the center of the card, it is easily cropped out, negating the use of the watermark to begin with. *sigh* It is so sad that these things are even necessary!

The reason that the watermarks are placed on the card itself is because images have been taken from SCS and the watermarks have been cropped out. I had one instance that they almost cut in half to get my info off so they could claim it as their own.

Geese, Jeanne...with all the trouble they went to just to steal your image, they could have created their own! Sorry there are so many unethical people out there.
Well I am really thick then, cause I have been trying to use Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 with the graphicsoft instructions and I can't do it for the life of me? Help
I use PE 4.0 and have found this to work for me. Open up your photo...and using the Text Tool type in what you want where you want it, then under EFFECTS, double click on the CLEAR EMBOSS. It turns the text into what I consider a watermark. I don't have a file that I save and use each time because I don't always use SU! stamps, so my copyright info changes each time. HTH
subscribing - BTW, there's supposed to be a way in Photoshop to do watermark in batches. For example, if you had 25 cards that you had pictures of that need watermarks, there's supposed to be a way to batch them up and watermark them all at once. If anyone has mastered this, please share!

Thanks, Lisa
I am sure there is a way to do this, it is a very complicated program, but all I do is open my watermark and place it on the clipboard. Then I can open any number of pics, and one at a time paste the water mark onto it. You could leave it at that but I find that each photo/scan needs some adjustments so it still takes me time to do a few. I also add the year down in the bottom corner which is another step but I like it as a reference of the year I created the card.
...funny thing about these programs, unless you use them all the time I find it is so easy to forget your way around them and what each tool can do - last year I was making animated gifs., this year it took me all morning to get my watermarks to look like I wanted them to! Priorities change I guess!

OMG, I was just thinking the same thing!! I used to make sig tags & banners for Ebay sellers, but I haven't used PSP in about a year or so, so now I've forgotten *everything*!! Watermarking should be easy for me, but I'm having a tough time also!!!! LOL!!!
I've been using MS Publisher, because I already have it and know how it works. It doesn't do really nice watermarks, but it does do layers and will save the text over the card in a jpg format.
I may yet have to break down and get a better photo software program. Up till now all my money's been going to ...
(sheepish grin) ...
STAMPS!!!!! Alright, I admit it ... I do like my stamps ... ;)
If you have never used this program before today I would say you did great to get it done in only 5 hours! Good for you!
If you want something more...keep playing with it - try a wider font and play around with the drop shadows and bevels untill you achieve true transparency. Then try making one each in midvalue grey, black and white - you might be surprised at which one looks the best once it is dropped onto your pics. I use all 3 depending on the value level of my picture.
and.. You have to use layers to get a watermark with multiple images/fonts layered over each other.
...have a look at mine in my gallery, created with PS 7.

I have PS7, no idea how do to most things with it. It was given to me and I find it not user friendly, unless you have a degree!
With all the great tips here, I managed to make something resembling a watermark. With a bit of fine tuning, I'm sure it will be fine.
Thanks for all the tips.
Okay I must be a dummy. I figured out how to make the watermark and saved it. but how do I get it onto my photo, this is where i am lost. I can't seem to figure out how to drop it on there.

Here's the step by step instructions for using your watermark with a free downloadable photo editing software called Gimp. If you type "gimp" into google you will find it easily. Before you go to the trouble of downloading and installing Gimp, though, you should first try these instructions with your existing software to see if you have something on your computer that will work for you.
Here you go....
*right mouse click on image and click on Open With... choose Gimp
*scale image if needed
*in image window (in Gimp) click on Image and pull down to Scale Image
*choose size (I do width at 800... other number changes to 600)
*click on scale
*if you want, click on View and choose 100% to make your image bigger
*in Image window, click on File and pull down to Open as Layer
*find your watermark and double click on it
*in The GIMP tool window, click on the image that looks like a plus sign with arrows (2nd row, 2nd last column)
*click on your watermark on your card.... make sure you have it chosen and not the card
*move the watermark to where you want it
*when the watermark is where you want it, click on Image and pull down to flatten image
*click on file and do save or save as
*voila!
Am I the only one who would be thrilled to have someone love my stuff so much that they want to steal it? If I ever saw a card from my blog somewhere else, I would just ask them nicely to remove it. If they did not, I would report it to their blog provider. It should be really easy for them to see by date whose was posted first.

You are not the only one. To be honest, I am not trying to make a water mark for my cards as much as I am trying to make one for pta, so that people do not take our pics and flyers off of our school website.
After following all the various links and trying different ways, I'm beginning to think that I DON'T need a watermark. I must be totally stupid cos I can't figure out a way to get the damn thing even made!
I might have to try this another night when the brain is a little fresher and I'm not soooooooo frustrated :(
Is your file on a transparent layer? If so open it, and open your card pic. Click on the watermark to bring it to the top, use the marquee tool to outline it (marching ants) go up to edit, copy. Click on your card pic to bring it forward, go up to edit, paste - your watermark should appear over your card, then use the move tool to put it where you want it.

Thanks so much for these directions!!!!
I was making it much harder than it needed to be.
Thank you for taking the time to post.
This is great!
Thanks for all the info... Not that i've uploaded alot of cards or anything, but certainly lurking and longing at the watermarks.
Will try to play later, after the water heater gets replaced.

I give up! I've followed various instructions on here, got so far but just can't get it!
I've now generously decided that if someone is mean enough to want to 'pinch' my stuff, I'll let them and take it as a compliment. That sounds better than saying that I must be as thick as............. ;)
Let me say up front that I have NO experience with this software, therefore I can't make any sort of recommendation other than it looks pretty good from the limited trial version that I downloaded for free. It doesn't look like it makes a 'true' watermark to me - meaning one that is transparent. But, I think for someone who has limited computer knowledge and skills it might be worth a look. It is made specifically for watermarking, and it even has a button that lets you insert the copyright symbol.
The full version does cost $49 and from what I can tell, this isn't one of those shareware versions that you can really use for a while. I wasn't able to actually save anything I made so that it was useful because the trial version is disabled. There's just enough there to see what it WILL do. So, I guess it depends on how much it's worth it to you to protect your work.
Having said all that, check it our yourself and see what you think: Watermark Factory
