After fighting to get a stamp just right, I added Ranger clear ultra thick embossing powder on top of it and basically ruined the stamped sentiment. Everything else I have is very fine, so I'm wondering if this stuff is intended for a completely different use. Help?
Yes, you’re right. If you do an on-line search (google) this description from Ranger pops up on the sites that sell it:
“Large particle dimensional medium perfect for paper, fiber and decorative arts! Use to fashion jewelry pieces, magnets, trinket boxes, frames and craft embellishments. This jar contains 6oz of ultra-thick embossing powder. Made in USA.” But that’s good news - other than the money you spent - since it means it wasn’t your technique that was the problem! : ) You want regular or ultra fine or fine embossing powder for sentiments.
Coated the hearts with a red ink, then a layer of UTEE. Heat set. Let it cool, added a layer of Versamark, then more UTEE. Cool, more Versamark, the some red glitter EP. Heat set. Then a couple more layers of Versamark and UTEE, heat setting between. If your piece isn't large, you can often just coat with UTEE while it's still warm.
On these, I inked up a stamp with Silver ink, then pressed the stamp into the last layer of the hearts while still warm.
Shaz, those are beautiful! And the wedding one - what a lifetime keepsake, amazing. It’s a 3D card and the gray patterned paper flips up or is there for the photograph? (Sorry, need to look on the computer.) And thank you - you taught me something (stamping on the warm UTEE).

I LOVE ultra thick embossing powder! The cracked glass technique is a favorite. I love to rub darker ink into the cracks to emphasize the vintage look. Using letter stamps and black ink to stamp into the warm UTEE is another favorite. When using silver UTEE, it is easy to make embellishments look like metal.
bjeans,Thank you! it's an easel card, the silver worded paper at the top is a printed vellum, just realised this pic is part finished, lol. The bottom had a sentiment that was matted & layered, then popped up on foam pads to provide the 'stop' for the easel part. Meaniegreen, thank you too. Laughing here, as we all get to fall down THAT rabbit hole!
Another similar idea. One heart is plain, one has a swirl stamp in gold, the third one I stamped Love words in black onto the base heart that I swiped red ink onto, then did the UTEE thing on top.
One cool technique I found in a book I have- Ink your piece, then add UTEE. Versamark and UTEE a couple of layers, heat setting between. Then when cool, Versamark again, then add UTEE. Then gently sprinkle a little Gold/Silver mica powder/ perfect pearls onto the UTEE.
Then heat set again, starting well away so you don't blow the UTEE off. As it melts the mica will sink into the UTEE. Then do another couple of UTEE layers on top. Looks awesome, I'll see if I can find the pic of it.

Heat embossing was the magic moment for me when learning to stamp, as it is for so many, according to the LSS owner who was teaching me. And it’s still at the top of the list. I’ve heat embossed multiple layers of silver and gold to give a metal look a la Jennifer McGuire, but that’s not UT. It just piles up and gets thick.
I have one on its way to me, too! Bought it from Better World Books. I love this site because they have new and used, have books that are often difficult to find, shipping is free, and they donate books and funds to literacy programs all over the world.

bjeans, you'll love that book! It's my most used crafting book. So many amazing ideas in it. Happy to have enabled, lol.
It arrived yesterday (Sunday)! It’s brilliant. I don’t buy DTBs* any more - too hard to read with my bad eyes, so I stick to e-books, but am relieved this book is large, the font a good size, tons of big photos and there’s lots of white space. (Quarry Books is the publisher and googling, see they have some other neat and unusual books.)
It’s packed with recipes. My only gripe is no index. Leafing through, “alcohol inks” zoomed by, but when I flipped to the back to find the page alphabetically, nope. That’s okay. That’s why PostIts aka bookmarks/tabs were created.
