Didn't have anything else to do this evening so decided to find out how many SCS'ers don't post -- unbelievable -- of the 314,900 SCSers registered over 239,000 have never posted. That 75%. Why? I'm not being critical; just curious. Do they just look at what's posted in the galleries and on the forums? What are your opinions?

There are a lot of people who just come here to get information, inspiration, ideas, etc., but who are content to be "lurkers". I was one of those for awhile. I was a bit timid about joining conversations or posting any of my artwork. Some eventually get comfortable (or brave) enough to post, others remain lurkers forever. It's all good...

I would imagine some (I know one) are less comfortable with computers/the internet. The person I know comes here often for inspiration. And while they have figured out how to browse the gallery, commenting/posting is not something they feel like tackling (and yes, I have offered how to show them).

Yes, that is an astounding number. I knew there were lurkers, but had no idea there were that many.

I am a very outgoing person and like talking to people, in real life, and on line. I started posting when I first registered here and haven't stopped, lol.

That is astounding! But I have to wonder why they would sign up if they just want to look and read, I believe you can do that without being a member. You have to be a member to post or add projects to the gallery. Or am I missing something?

I joined on my first visit when a friend suggested I check this site out, then was overwhelmed by the talent and knowledge on here that far exceeded my expectations. (I had been stamping for about 3 years and had gone to stamp camps and the yearly stamping expo where many companies gathered to display, demonstrate, and sell. Silly me...I thought I had improved greatly and knew a few things. HA!!!)

I became one of those lurkers. For as long as I have been a member, I don't have many posts. But everyone has been great to answer my questions. I have learned lots. But I still feel inferior and have not started a gallery -- especially when I read the posts that seem to crop up once a year or so about CASEing cards. Unless it is at stamp club or stamp camp or stamp-a-stack, it is rare I copy a card exactly -- and even then I often change something about the card. I usually will take a little of this and a little of that and a ribbon treatment from 3 or 4 cards I see on here to make just one card. I have friends that love my cards, four that even have saved every card I have given them, and one that has most of them on display all the time at her house. I make card packets as gifts for several friends...they even will ask if I am close to having another packet ready since they have used them all up. So I guess I have improved more, but still no where close to what I see on here.

Thanks to all who share tips, sketches, tutorials, gallery photos, and blogs.

You can look without signing up, but you can't see all of the posts in the gallery and you can't make favorites.

But I wonder what percentage of those people with no posts had signed up and looked around and then decided not to visit the site anymore, for one reason or another. They wouldn't have "un-signed" up...

I have to agree with MNCarol on many things. I have asked a few questions and made a few comments but that is about all. I do love reading everything on here and have learned so much. I love viewing the gallery and although I don't comment on many cards I do favorite some.... and in doing that I assume the poster knows that I do like their card. I have not displayed any of my cards as I do not feel they are anything special and I do not know how to do it. I am not sure why I would do it either as I would not be looking for any comments.
Thanks for all who take the time to comment/post on this site - it is very informative, helpful, fun and inspiring!!!!

I would not have believed it was 75% with no posts but I should not have been when I see alot of the same "names" pop up here. I have been noticing more new posters and have enjoy the additions. I lurk much more than I comment or post. Like you have said, this is a great place for inspiration an knowledge. The talent is awesome and if you go back to the beinging of SCS you will see vast changes in style from then till now.

ahhh I bet you are right, I hadn't even thought of that. I just figured they were shy, lack confidence or afraid they would say something that people wouldn't like.

I'm surprised at the large number who haven't participated. I'm like Bugga in OK, I'm very outgoing and I love to talk to people. My very bestest friend in the entire world is very shy, she won't participate in forums.

I was a lurker for quite some time as well. I mainly came for inspiration from the gallery, but wasn't tech savvy at all and didn't know how or have the time to learn how to post my cards. I was a demo at that time and really appreciated the demo side of the site for up to date info and ideas because my upline was states away from me. I started asking questions and sharing answers when I had them on the demo side.
Fast forward....after benefiting so much from what others were sharing in the gallery I decided it was time to give back and started uploading some cards. After a while I decided to try out some challenges and now I'm HOOKED!
Some of us are just slow to try new things (different generation and computer skills and styles! ;) )

When I first joined SCS I was still working. I would pop in during working hours and didn't
feel it was appropriate to post on my working computer. Then I'd go home and get busy
and really didn't have a lot of time. When I did post it was generally requesting info. And always someone would respond and I appreciated that, and still do. Maybe real life keeps
many from posting. That was my experience anyway.

I didn't post anything right away either. I just 'visited' for awhile and then one day I got up the nerve to start my gallery.

I was a lurker for a long time...I still tend to be To be fully honest, most of the time I don't feel like I have anything to contribute that hasn't already been said. So I tend to stay in the background and cruise the boards.

I was dragged here kicking and screaming ( haha ) from people i felt comfortable with at twopeas into the gallery... and did that for a while.. and then I got comfortable with some people here and holy carp do you see that post count? ( at two peas which I have been a member of for more years I'd bet I have not hit 5K yet...

here's another thought, when I first visited this site, I didn't say much either because, in my mind it was the su demo site. the gallery was FILLED with su only projects. and I'd guess that a large number of that 75% are or were su demo's who were told to join to build their personal business. ( or for sample making ideas)

As you will notice, I don't post very often and usually it's because I see a card I want to CASE (for personal use) and like to let the designer know.

I enjoy the site though and like to read other people's ideas and thoughts - I'm glad you are not all like me!!

I've always thought "Lurker" had a nefarious connotation, I would rather think of myself as a "Learner." We covet first with our eyes. I see wonderful examples of skilled crafting and I aspire in my cards to attempt what I have seen and learned in the great tutorials. Even though I don't post, I still feel a full member of the community. I am especially indebted to Beate's ( The Great Beate!)specific attention to my little problems over the years and others who have improved my experience with their suggestions and advice. So, as a "Learner" I'm building up my confidence to open a gallery and post slowly. Carnegie Hall doesn't have Suzuki concerts. Some of us are still content to be the attentive audience who views your work. It was fascinating to know just how big the audience is, though. Thanks for this discussion.

Red face Remembering my first post...

Reading this thread, I had to chuckle a little bit. When I joined just over a year ago, I placed my first post only to get my post modified and a gentle chiding from a Mod because I'd used an acronym which when spelled out contains an expletive. I learned quickly, when on SCS, to not type like I talk. Being in the military for over 20 years, I have some rather "colorful" acronyms and phrases I use when talking.

I have to say, I'm glad I joined.... this is a great site!

As well as the lurkers and spammers there are also just people who signed up and then in time moved on. One of the tasks the BRAK co-ordinators do is checking how recently people have been active (as in viewing, not even posting) on SCS, as there's not a lot of point in sending BRAK cards to people who are not at all active. The RAK list too differentiates between active and inactive members.

I "signed up" the first day I visited this site because I knew it was a site I was going to come back to over and over again. I only started to upload cards at first (after figuring out how to do it and the rules etc...) and at that point I didn't even know what the forums were... I was scared at first to post (there are so many chatty-kathy's on here that it's sometimes intimidating) but I eventually started to post here and there..

I don't have many posts considering how long I've been on SCS, but at least I'm no longer afraid! lol

Looks like most of us have the same story.... I signed up as soon as I visited the site like jazzytobi but was a lurker for quite a while. Didn't post anything for a couple of years and then started commenting on cards. Most of my posts are comments. Finally three years after joining, I started a gallery. What a wonderful site for inspiration and, of course, for MAKING me spend money on new things that I see

I'm one of the non-posters. I love to stamp. I just don't have that "part" that can come up with my own ideas. I can copy anything I see, but I just can't come up with the ideas that the rest of you can. Thank you all for being so talented and letting people like me lurk!

I have been a member for a while now but don't comment often as I don't always feel I can contribute much to the discussion or what I may have said has already been said I visit often though as I enjoy reading all the posts and learn a great deal. I don't have a gallery here though as I tend to post mostly to my blog and that isn't frequently enough! I suppose I'm a doer rather than a talker about it! Having said that I can 'waste' time enough with the best of them reading blogs and visiting forums
I'm also brilliant at stopping threads

I'd be interested to know what percent of the people on here upload to the gallery. I pretty much gave that up since my card was usually visable for all of 2 minutes, if that. I hardly ever got a comment. I guess with the shear volume of this site, that's just the way it is. I always try to find the ones with no comments so I can say something encouraging. We all need a pat on the back now and then.

I upload but not that often. Unless you do the challenges and get your card uploaded right away, most won't see a lot of comments. When I first joined in 2004, people got lots and lots of comments. Now, even those who used to get lots of comments don't get as many. Too many cards uploaded. Like I said, if you want comments, you have to do the challenges. My brain doesn't work that quickly to come up with a daily challenge, I pretty much do my own thing.

I haven't posted pictures for a long time; mainly because I have a new computer and don't know how to make the pictures small enough to be accepted for the gallery. No loss. I just love to look at other stampers' creations and get ideas I can use.

I think there's just a lot of folks who like the inspiration, yet don't feel the need to be involved socially. I've been around since 2004 (I'm number 1657 I think), and actually a bit before that as I had another user name that I forgot or something. I was involved socially for a time, but now I just lurk about.

In terms of uploading, I do find it far more cumbersome here than to post on my blog. Having to resize and then be careful with batch loading can be very frustrating. I also find that I get far more comments on my blog than here so it tends to be a case of going where I get more reinforcement.

That said, I find the challenges and galleries very inspirational and do love to hear all the "news".

Did you know you can adjust it so that the gallery shows you cards by # of comments they've received. I try to go in from time to time and comment on a few that have none or few.

Well, here ya go, this is my first post. I'm very comfortable with computers, and forums even, but I've just been lurking (for a few weeks), getting ideas, seeing what the place is like. And I guess just waiting for the perfect thread to post in ... so here is my very first post!

ETA: Looks like I joined in September! Oops! Just really started using the site though very recently ...

Some of those are probably true lurkers, but like someone else said, I bet most of them signed up and just never visit the site.

I love to stalk the galleries and forums looking for inspiration. I posted a little bit for a while and left many comments. I started uploading pictures (which I agree with another poster - it is too cumbersome to downsize the pictures) but my quality of cards is just not as fantastic as others - I consider myself a beginner (even though I have been at it for a while).
Then I got quite busy - we moved and I started a new full time job and unfortunately my card making suffered. I am now back in the swing of things and hope to start posting more again. However, I must say that it takes time to upload and blog - which sometimes I would rather be stamping. If I was gifted and got a lot of readers, then maybe it would be worth it to spend a lot of time doing these things. I must say that I usually browse here for my ideas - and always am in luck to get one from another great card maker. So thank you ladies for posting your cards.
